We will be hiking in Baxter State Park in August and staying in lean-to's. How bad are the bugs? Other than DEET are there other things we should be doing? Long sleeves? Head nets?

The locals can help more but I'll say that hiking all of the AT in Maine starting August 17, I didn't experience any bug problems. Never used repellant. I heard that the mosquitoes were gone by mid-August (normally).

Black flies are usually gone, mosquitoes will visit around dusk, gone after dark. Deer and Moose Flies may be around, they usually gravitate to you head, wear a hat. Some folks put a patch of flypaper on their hat and catch them hwne they land.
