Hello,
I've just started a Podcast about hiking. You can find the main site at www.trailcast.com (http://www.trailcast.com). The RSS feed for the Podcast is http://www.trailcast.com/rss

For those that do not know about Podcasting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting), it is essentially Internet radio designed to be downloaded to your portable mp3 player. The programs are typically distributed as mp3 files, usually by using a Podcast client like Ipodder, or Doppler Radio, which use RSS to grab the files.

A good general Podcasting resource is http://podcastalley.com/

Most Podcasts are spoken-word format, with genres ranging from sports, comedy, personal audio-blogs, politics, etc. I found nothing about hiking, so I decided to try to fill that void.

The format of Trailcast is essentially telephone interviews with hikers, members of trail associations & clubs, equipment manufacturers, well-know people along various trails-- anybody that has anything to do with hiking. Trailcast is not solely about one particular trail or geographic area, though since it is AT thru-hiker season, it may seem a bit AT-centric.. I'm just getting started with this and will do my best to balance the content as it comes.

Trailcast is a hobby, and I'm not trying to make any money from it.

I already have the first two programs available-- conversations with Miss Janet, and a 2002 AT Thru-hiker named "Troll". I have about 5 more interviews already completed and will be adding them over the next week or so. I am hoping to have a new program each week.

Enjoy..!

Bob:

Thanks for your work! You beat me to it Amigo! I hope to start a Podcast of my on in the next few weeks. By the way, I'll bve seeing Gilfors at the upcoming Southeastern Foot Trails Conference in South Carolina. He's participating in the American Hiking Society Volunteer Vacation at Table Rock State park.

One more funny story about Gilford Bush (aka Troll). I met him in '03 out on the Cumberland Trail. He was talking in his thick southern drawl to a young kid who was helping us build some rock steps. The kid finally says to Gilford, "Mister, you're the only person I've ever met who says the word Sonofabitch with one syllable, and $hiT with 4 syllables.

True story! I laughed my tail off when I heard that!

Well that's a first.. I swear I was just hours away from trademarking the Internet, but some politician beat me to it...

Podcasting is such a fun new thing and there is so much room here for content. When you get your program rolling, let me know and I'll be happy to mention it in the Trailcast programs..

Very, very well done. I don't know much about all these MP3 players and I-pods and such, but the free Real Player OR the Windows Media Player seems to be all you need to listen to these after you download 'em on your 'puter.

Jaybird, I had the same idea myself! Model-T would be great for a trailcast. By the way, RC, great job on these. Very enjoyable and well done.

I second the thoughts of everyone else who has responded to this thread so far. The PODcasts are wonderful. I have gotten through 4 of them already and they really tell you a lot about the subjects. Great idea and great job!!!

Bob,
These are great - I enjoy listening. I echo the comments here that you should seek out AT thru-hikers with good stories to tell.. especially some of the well-known veterans from WhiteBlaze. I'm sure there are enough characters here to keep you going for a while.

Keep up the good work!

Hi guys,
Just wanted to let you know that I have a new program of Trailcast available. I apologize for the delay in getting these last two out-- been the busiest 2 months of my life. In this program I'm talking with the Barefoot sisters, Isis and Jackrabbit, who did their legendary 2001 yo-yo thru-hike barefoot. I also talk about my recent canoe trip in the Quetico Provincial park in Canada and how a light-weight hiking approach didn't really work out there :)

I am very eager to interview ModelT, and hope to be in touch with him soon.

I'm having a lot of fun doing this and really glad you guys like the programs..

Hi guys,
I just published another program of Trailcast. I'm speaking with Nate Olive (Tha Wookie) and Sarah Janes (Island Mama) about the continuous hike of the West Coast Trail they made last Summer. This interview was done in a restaurant in the French Quarter of New Orleans, so there is a good deal of background noise-- hopefully not too much to be annoying--

You can find it at www.trailcast.org.

The podcast RSS feed is http://www.trailcast.org/rss/

Hi,
I just published another program of Trailcast. I interviewed Andrew Skurka <www.andrewskurka.com> about his recently completed continuous hike of the Sea-to-Sea route, walking close to 8000 miles in 339 days across the US from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. I had been playing phone tag with him all Summer while he was still on the trail, and am excited to at being able to speak with him at length about his amazing hike.

You can find the program at the Trailcast web site: http://www.trailcast.org/

an RSS feed suitable for a Podcast client may be found at http://www.trailcast.org/rss/

Enjoy,
-Bob

I just noticed that my doppler has a copy of your newest podcast waiting for me to listen to it. I have very much enjoyed your podcasts, particularly your interviews with the barefoot sisters and tha wookie and island mama (even though the sound quality was poor, I was very intrigued by the content.) Keep up the good work.

podcasts rock! where else can you get decent quality "radio" programs without commercials on subjects tailored to your intrests. I have been an AM radio junkie for years, but am now recording my favorite AM radio programs for later listening and commercial skipping using the excellent program Replay Radio. Further, I am now downloading several different podcasts with topics ranging from hiking, formula 1, IRL, technology, video games, boardgames etc... If you love talk radio but are tired of the commercials, log in to podcast.net or podcastalley.com or even itunes and check it out.

Bob,

I downloaded and listened to all your shows the past few weeks. As a person that has both been involved in broadcasting, and hiking for decades - Great Work!!!!

You manage to bring out some great personalities to interview as well.

Especially got a kick out of the Barefoot Sisters and that gentleman you first interviewed - forgot his name - he was a hoot!

Again, great work and looking forward to more.
