No word on whether he was ultimately successful.

Hope not. Georgia has done a wonderful thing for those of us that have yet to get it right with food bag hanging.

I have heard that some have learned to shake the cables hard enough for the bags to tear open or the clips to open and release the bags.

I rather doubt that the behavior is random. Probably it has worked for aur furry friend before.

Just got back from GA and NC. I found the cable system to not be very good. Packs on hooks can be shaken off very easy. I always clipped a carabiner from my bag through the wire loop as an added level of security.

The system is not idiot proof. It is bear proof if you secure your bag/pack with more than a hook up! Carry what you need to attach to the cable and use a good quality container and it will be successful.

Trouble is that the bears are the ones who pay the price for the idiots. Would be much easier to have a clip on both ends to start with. If the food stays on the wire then I would think that the bears behavior would also change over time.

Yes ,I agree but the reality is that all clips break at some point and we need to be in self control. I use a small s hook which is about 10 grams --not a hugh penality to carry. And for what it is worth to history buffs the picture is not of Georgia ----Does anyone know where it is?

looks like Spence Field in the Smokies.

I got it from a Facebook page which identified it as in the Smokies; didn't say which particular site so you're probably correct.

I am curious if you were in the field and had rope and concrete string - what would you do better?

Ha, ha, that's a great, real funny photo! And the comment by Wise Old Owl-Yeehaw! I'm sure Grylls would laugh too!

Effectiveness of Bear Cables ???

Very effective. Very effective at keeping the bears busy trying to get other's food, while I sleep with mine some distance away.
