I am suppose to be hiking the AT in the SNP for 10 days starting tomarrow. I have major conflicting reports as to trail conditions. From Patc cleared most trails to trail being totally impassible. Does anyone have a report. If the trail is impassible i need to change my plans (quickly). If any one can help with info please do so. Thanks

"Open as of noon, July 6: Appalachian Trail from Beahms Gap to Elkwallow & Byrd's Nest #4. The following trails remain closed due to fire activity: Jeremys Run, Neighbor Mountain, Knob Mountain and Knob Mountain Cutoff. "

Incident: Neighbor Mountain Fire Wildfire
Released: 15 hrs. ago [ie, about 7 pm Friday evening - GB]
Overview: Crews again worked to mop up around the nearly 12-miles of fire perimeter. During mop up, crews work the perimeter of the fire to put out any warm or hot spot within 100 feet of the fireline. There was a heat advisory for the entire day with triple digit heat indices this afternoon and the same is forecast for tomorrow. The Appalachian Trail between Elkwallow and Beahms Gap, and Byrd's Nest #4 Shelter reopened today at noon.
Size: Unchanged from yesterday's estimated 2,138 acres.

It sounds like the AT is fully open in Shenandoah. Just be aware that an open trail can disappear like (pun intended) a puff of smoke.

These guys are out there right now in the South District. Check with them on Monday or Tuesday. http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?84379-SNP-Southern-section-July-7-9 (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?84379-SNP-Southern-section-July-7-9)

I was supposed to go with them but something came up. In addition to Hikerhead, JohnnyBGood, and Jersey Dave, 2 other guys are also on the hike.

Just got a phone call from Hikerhead. They're on top of HighTop Mountain right now (highest point in South District). It's hot - no surprise. They've already seen a rattlesnake. No blowdowns thus far but they're only 3 miles into the South District.

Was in the nothern discrict after the storm last week, all was good. Just a few trees down. Water was good at the springs and the section that was closed due to the fire is now open. Be careful with the high temps. Saw 4 bears near Gravel Springs Hut!!

thanks for the help guys. We have planned this little trip ( our first multiday hike) for months. We did a prehike to check out gear but We left the At in SNP the day the storm hit because of heat. Looking forward to getting back this week. Thanks again

I was there early in the week. There are many blowdowns but it's passable and getting better. I was in the storm at Highrock hut and hiked north out of the park so that was all the trail that I saw after the storm. It must have been a pain for those that first encountered all the blowdowns in the north end of the park. I was warned I'd have to take off my pack to get through but it wasn't that bad.
