33.9 miles.

Is there a closer road crossing either North or South of Hot Springs? Something in the 10-20 mile range?

Thanks again

I-40 north of the Smokies right? There is a road that leads to within 400 yards of Roaring Fork Shelter, which is right in the middle of this section. I heard this shelter might be removed, but there was a nice campsite close too. Anyway, my hiking buddy and I split this section to basically do one night weekend hikes. We drove in, dropped the cars, then took the real short hike to the shelter, slept in and started from there both times, North and South. The shelter is so close to the road that you could run back to your car and refill your whiskey flask:D. The road itself is a winding mountain road, maybe 20-30 minutes drive from any main road.

You also have a good gravel road at Brown Gap, about 8 trail miles north of I-40.

From I-40 exit 7 Harmon's Den. Gravel Cold Springs USFS 148 3 miles east and then USFS 148A for 1.2 miles to Gap.

Wonder if they still hold the Brown Gap Feast? Should be coming up or just past. :-?

The last I heard, the rat patrol was still planning for a 2005 event at Brown's Gap, without the head rat, who has some kind of ailment that will prevent his participation. I don't remember the proposed date.

There is also a gravel road up to Snowbird Mtn, to the FAA radio beacon. However, it might be locked off due to the obvious strategic significance of the site.
