We're looking at this same hike in September. Are you going to go straight through or will you be planning a resupply along the way? Also how are you going to access Mt Springer? I'm in the process of planning our trip and would appreciate any ideas you've gathered. We did the 69 miles from Partnership Shelter to Damascus VA last month. I really enjoyed the AT and bet you will two, Randy

No plans to use the chairlift, although I might hike out to Colonel's Chair and shock the tourists.

Wasn't sure Rusk and Leavitt count as real hiking, since it's not white-blazing or blue-blazing. In fact, it's kinda no-blazing, since those two don't have marked trails. How can you be a Real Hiker without passing every single blaze on a marked trail? :-?

Mid October to Cloudland Canyon for a new-gear shakedown. Real short 2-mile day on Friday after the drive down, 7 or so miles on Saturday, then another short day on Sunday before driving home. Got a new tent and sleeping bag that hasn't been anywhere except the backyard yet, and will probably have a new sleeping pad by then, too.

Overall Run next Saturday night/Sunday. Will be short, but I'm taking my wife, who will undoubtedly be taking a butt load of camera gear with her. Last time we hiked, I had to talk her out of taking the 4x5 to plateau point (not really, but it sure felt like it).

How about the Pine Mountain Trail - AT loop in Grayson Highlands? Beautiful section of trail with a lot of diversity in terrain and views. The Pine Mountain Trail is the old AT.

What's normally the best time of year to cycle the Katy? I'm guessing late April, May, October, early November?

I hiked 46 miles on the Ozark Trail last March.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't say the BS word, people here get crazy. Cool, I ref at TP all the time. Was stationed at Lejeune with a guy from Katonah, he lives in Wappinger Falls now, I go see him when I work at Milbrook School. I've walked north of there, but never south. So tommorrow HB and I are headed there to train for his Maine walk. So WOO and 'Socks will be watching the Cafe, keep E-4 off the wall.

Well, I guess my daughter and I might be Real Hikers, then, even if we are Clueless Weekenders. We made it up Rusk and back again. We were wet as anything, with soaking fog that got in everything. The prickers were something awful, every square inch of exposed skin got torn up. Breaking through the brambles took a lot longer than we anticipated, and we wound up bivouacking on East Rusk at about 3100 feet - which is a pretty grim place to crash. What with one thing and another, we decided to leave SW Hunter for another trip. But we bagged one trailless peak - without anyone showing us the way.

I inadvertently gave my daughter a trail name. We were tracking another hiker back down, and she unexpectedly turned out to be good at it! At one point where I didn't see an obvious track, I asked her, "which way now, hawkeye?" She likes it.
