He's conning you. He's only 1/10th the size of a regular thru hiker, thus should only require 1/10 of what a normal size guy needs in terms of food, supplies, lodging. He should be able to hike like a king on $500, staying at the nicest tulip beds, living for days off a bag of peanuts, and whatnot.

That's because it's so rare there. When I lived in Conway & it snowed what limited people I knew there has all skidded of the road or had accidents with what I (from NE ) considered a minor dusting. MM, worst situation I ever ran into was one Christmas driving home to Florida from Houston. Just turned off I-10 to go south I-75 and the took 1 hour to drive about 1 mile or so. They had shut the interstate down because of the snow. Had to sleep in a temporary shelter (Church Building). They had over 100 wrecks in that county because the Florida Crackers had never driven in the snow and ice before. Even the McDonald's was sold out of food. Next morning they opened the interstate back up, but I took back roads home since I knew it would be bumper-to-bumper.

I'd be glad to friend you on FB if I could find you on FB. But '2013 Thru Hikers' would be sailing under false colours. Clueless weekender I am, and clueless weekender I remain.

I found you on FB, thanks! :)... Got a friend request in 2 ya! The first 2013 Thru hikers FB page was intended just for the class of 2013 hikers. I did not realize that b/c so many other friends had joined the page so I asked to join as well. :) A new 2013 hikers page was born where any and all peeps were welcome. Even lowly section hikers, like myself. :D It's been double the pleasure, double the fun!

Anyone can join.. no discrimination!

Ahh.... I need to get out and HIKE!

Wow Coach, we went straight from winter into summer. Yesterday, 1 week ago, we had 2 inches of snow. It was freezing cold. Yesterday, (1 week later) it is sunny, humid and 84 degrees.. We've had to run our AC for the past 3 days:eek: It's on again today... so HOT! You can get sunburned so quickly 2. :D

That's because it's so rare there. When I lived in Conway & it snowed what limited people I knew there has all skidded of the road or had accidents with what I (from NE ) considered a minor dusting. Then you get idiots with 4wd that think they can speed through it & never think all vehicles have four brakes & can skid & do skid the same.

ice doesn't discriminate between 2wd and 4wd.

Admittedly I really did enjoy the novel and have read it twice. The first time I read it was before I had hiked much of the A.T. outside of Connecticut and the wildly overdramatic description he gave of the time that he got caught on a ridge during a blinding storm had me more worried about the terrain than I ever should have been.

Yale vs Quinnipiac, not only are they both from Connecticut, but Yale is on Whitney ave. in New Haven and Quinnipiac is 5 miles north on Whitney Avenue in Hamden!

just had an emergency call in Lancaster today - an Amish couple with four children with a growing infestation of odorous house ants. The lack of TV and radio or electricity was very interesting... The kids, four of them were calm and somewhat bored (no Methylphenidate (Ritalin) here folks) The youngest boy had a wonderful conversation about fishing.. well needless to say I did not mention the Internet and covered the smart phone... I really like where they are going....

My buddy recently moved out of an appartment on Chapel Street, it one of the only places I've been where I wished that I carried bear spray.

...bedbug spray too...

most bed bug sprays do not work very well- and the number of stars 1-5 does not matter Stay with 4 million visible stars...

I am curious would people like a post on how to inspect a hotel for Bed Bugs?

Wow... i hate snakes. I remember that climb 2. I loved top the of Snowbird Mt.

We camped about 2 miles past I40. When I got up, the next morning, my legs were covered with red spots. Something bit me but it didn't bother me at all. It looked funny tho. :)

It is a beautiful spring weekend in south/central Pa. Not too many folks in Gettysburg. In Swatara Gap, we pulled over at the Burger King, there was a scout troop in there from our state.....they were on their way to...........Gettysburg!!! They were going to camp somewhere in the area. I noticed 4 different troops at the park. On the auto tour, near the North Cackalacky Memorial I noticed a 'Youth Group' camping area. That would be very cool. Then on the way out to our motel on Rt.116, in a farmers field I spotted a troops campsite all set up...Nice an 'covered and aligned' I have hope for our nation still, when I see some kids being raised right!
Anyway, Overload needs to find at church, then we will finish the auto tour, and then go to the new Visitor center.

Well, I finally prevailed over Pico Peak yesterday. Ascended once again via Sherburne Pass trail, continuing via Summit Glades ski trail once the blue blazer joined it. Was a peak-melt kinda day, morning after a medium snow/ice event - felt like it was raining at noon-time, that slowed considerably above 3500' and there was no "snow-melt rain" on the return, sincer it had run its course for the day. Summit Glades, a black diamond route, was so steep on one pitch I considered putting on the snowshoes which got a free trip on my back; elsewise, the well-packed trail meant that Micro Spikes sufficed.

Took a while to find the proper summit, which was marked with a blue blaze. Lots of ski-resort equipment and communications facilities up top, and with the rime ice coating the short trees and clouds rolling in from the west, it felt like a haunted landscape. Great views to the north and south, and eastward into the CT River Valley and New Hampshire - could see Ellen/Abraham, white-capped Mansfield and neighbors, Ascutney, Stratton and Okemo. Killington hid in the newly-arrived clouds before peaking out a few minutes before I began the return trip - got a few nice snaps of it. Could see the lower reaches of the western Whites, but Moosilauke's, the Kinsmans' and the Franconias' higher reaches were obscured by fog when I was at the summit. I had a false Washington sighting, a white-capped mountain above closer ones, but that was due east, a fellow hiker informed me - turned out it was bald-topped Mt. Cardigan.

Here are a couple shots of Killington:2109021091
This is rime ice near the summit:

A pretty slope-scape north of the summit, on descent: 21094

I'd be tickled to death with a 600 ft. elevation gain on my local trails. I think there is one spot that I get about 12 ft. if I happen to go that direction. Since it travels behind a sewage treatment plant I usually forgo that particular segment.

Getting intermittent signals at Icewater Springs shelter.

Got a shot in the butt yesterday to cure my cold.
Feel improved and should catch the others Tuesday at StandingBear.
Hot Springs Thursday?
Light rain and strong winds are "testing" the tarptent.

Oh, on that short hike, I brought a trash bag and cleaned up what I found, as usual.

Today's haul was pretty weird.

2 24-ounce cans Twisted Tea.
One heavy-duty black rubber glove.
Several plastic grocery bags.
One white reflector, the sort that goes in bicycle spokes.
One pair of blue plaid boxer shorts.

There must be a story behind this trash. There surely must.
