Congrats Rasty on quitting smoking.
No one in my family smokes so I don't pay attention to how much cigarettes cost. Yesterday I got gas at the QT and the woman in front of me bought 2 cartons. I heard the clerk tell her that would be $93. I was shocked! Thats real money! I did a quick search when I got home and saw that in 2010 GA was the 44th most expensive state for cigarettes. The highest, New York, was more than twice as high as GA. Wow. I really had no clue.

I hear the snow is finally off the trails in the Catskills. Got at least a couple of day trips down there lined up, both at least partially bushwhacks. Countryman Kill Falls and Little Stoppel Point this Saturday, and Kaaterskill High Peak up the west side from Cortina next week. Both with partners I haven't hiked with before; hope they can put up with me. I'm s-l-o-w.
Any of the Northeast hikers here interesting in heading over there for an overnighter or 3-4 day later in the season? I've got my eye on the Blackheads, the Burroughs range, and the Devil's Path, at least. I can promise a relaxed pace with plenty of time to enjoy the views (which are spectacular). A couple of the hikes that I'm looking to do would be easier with a car shuttle available.
(If I don't hear from the Cafe customers, I may repeat this post over in the 'Other Trails' forum, but I wanted to give the regulars here the first 'heads up.'

Hung out with a scientist today - his specialty is Mosquitoes! While he was in college years ago he was required for his theasus to sit by a marsh and test all the current products out there. He would sit in a chair, with exsposed legs and arms for hours, untill each product got ten bites. Deet came in first place with an unusual break down
1-2 hours 60% deet - Spray ON
2-4 hours Cream
4-6 hours liquid wipe.
Keep in mind micro encapsulation wasn't around back then and so were the proprietary blends.

My goodness that's a big tent. Either it's no problem in a storm or "we aren't in Kansas anymore"!
How cool is this? Nearly everyone in Coastal Connecticut heard a sound ranging from a loud rumbling to a houseshaking bang last Friday night. Most of us thought it was caused by a military Jet going supersonic too close to shore, turns out the answer is much cooler:
http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/Possible-Meteorite-in-Wolcott-204294971.html
Meteorite Lands on Home in Wolcott
http://media.nbcconnecticut.com/images/wolcottmeteorite_722.jpg
Yale expert confirmed Tuesday that an object that crashed through a house in Wolcott Friday night was a meteorite.
Larry Beck, of Williams Court in Wolcott, called police at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday and said a rock crashed through the roof of his house on Friday night and damaged the roof and copper piping, and cracked the ceiling in his kitchen.
"All the sheet rock had broken apart and it was on the floor," Beck said.
That was around the time that people from several towns along the shoreline (http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/Mysterious-Boom-Rattles-Windows-in-Connecticut-203874971.html) called police and reported a loud boom that rattled windows.
Beck told police that he’d heard a loud crash and thought that a joist or rafter had broken.
When he checked the attic on Saturday morning, he found a hole in his roof, damage to the pipes and rock broke in half in the attic, police said.
"As I'm crawling across, I say 'honey, I can see some daylight coming through the roof," Beck said.
At first, police thought the rock was a broken piece of airport runway concrete that had dropped from a plane when landing gear was being lowered, because Beck said that there is a lot of overhead airline traffic at all and Bradley Airport and Oxford Airports are nearby, police said.
Officials contacted the New England Regional Office of the Federal Aviation Administration and arrangements were made to have someone from the FAA view the rock.
Beck also contacted a local meteorolgist about the rock that crashed through his roof. John Bagioni, who owns Fax-Alert Weather Service, LLC in Burlington, immediately thought the rock might be a meteorite. The description of the rock, coupled with reports of a loud boom across the state around the time the rock struck the home, lead Bagioni to his conclusion.
Bagioni contacted NBC Connecticut meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan Monday afternoon about the discovery in Wolcott.
On Monday, NBC Connecticut contacted police about the possibility of it being a meteorite and police said they were made aware that a meteor shower had taken place on Friday night.
Bagioni said he was called in to help check out the specimen and his opinion is that this appears to be a Chondrite meteorite.
After examining the object on Tuesday, Stefan Nicolescu, the collections manager for the Mineralogy Division at the Yale Peabody Museum confirmed it was in fact a meteorite.
We are toward the end of the Lyrids meteor shower, which happens every year between April 16 and April 26, when Earth crosses the orbit of comet Thatcher, according to Nicolescu.
The first recorded meteroite in the New World fell in Weston, Connecticut in 1807,according to the Peabocy Museum Web site (http://peabody.yale.edu/collections/meteorites-and-planetary-science/weston-meteorite).
There were reports of loud explosions (http://peabody.yale.edu/collections/meteorites-and-planetary-science/weston-meteorite) from more than 40 miles away and fragments of stone fell in at least six places.
Hundreds of meteorites fall to earth each year, but only five to 10 were immediately recovered, according to the Peabody's Web site on Meteorites and Planetary Science.
Very cool!!!
That is remarkable! I've seen a lot of shooting stars over the years, some very bright and long lasting. I've never heard one though.
Best was Perseids in August 1974. Worked as a cabin counselor and riding instructor at Mondamin in Tuxedo, NC.
Had one night off every 2 weeks. The day came totally overcast and we were bummed. Got the bright idea to go up Mt Mitchell and see if we could get above the clouds. There was a shelter about a mile from the summit that could be reached from a side trail. Sure enough, when we got there we were literally 100 feet above the top of the clouds. Looked like a sea of white at our feet and a bazillion stars above, Tied hammocks to those sturdy little 8 foot tall trees at 6,000 feet and watched the most amazing show I've seen before or since. There were up to 30 visible per minute at times. Made us feel kinda small but very blessed.
that is truly an experience you will never forget!

Unless you want sandy shoes. Growing up in south Florida our annual celebration was the Sandy Shoes Festival.
Motto was something like once you get the sand in shoes you will never want to go back (during the exponential growth of the 60s and 70s).

Well, not wanting to slur the Floridians, but to me, significant sand in the shoe hurts just as much as a good snowball building up under your crampons. Feels like you strapped a rock to the bottom of your foot. I'll stick with my gaiters....:sun

Leg better but still weak. Now with all the snow we had this month I have tendinitis from shoveling! Looking at over 3' this month. One that got me was when I had to prep for what they thought was going to be another big storm with all the snow that had fallen off the roof! Breaking up the ice & heavy snow.2130021301

Trying not to commit to any fixed mileages.
Plan is about 8 mile or so tomorrow afternoon (I have sore toes), then probably to some hostel about 21 mile from Erwin for the rain Sat night.
After that full speed to Damascus I think. IM and I hope to do at least 15 mile days for a while.

As i recall, that last 20 miles or so into Damascus is relatively flat walking on the ridge line. It was nicknamed the Tennessee Turnpike when we hiked it back in the day.
You'll love Laurel Fork Gorge coming up. A portion of the trail runs along an old railroad bed. The waterfall should be nice with all the rain you've been getting. Lots of wildflowers in the section before Watauga Lake.

Nothing "wrong" with it.
Unless, like Minnesota Smith, you overestimate how far you can hike on a certain day and have to spend the nite in a public bathroom in the winter to stay warm. Pretty disgusting, but what would he have done if the bathroom had not been there?

Yeah, he was 81, and a lot of those years probably would not be considered easy or healthy ones. But he sure could sing (especially back in the day).
I might need to see if Lone Wolf has time for a second bouncer job ;)
Always fun whttp://www.acuteaday.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tigger-bouncing.gifhen bouncers meet.
Sneriously though, all we did was a little redecorating. The wallpaper was driving my cat up the wall, so to speak, so we changed it to camo. She likes to think she's invisible. Then we fixed the stool covers, drapes, and carpet........... all now turkey turd tan. She suggested such subtle shades soothe unsettled psyches. (Shelter cat, you know.) Garfield was a bit menacing.

this would be so awesome if it were on pg. 1776! (this one is 1774) ( if it contained WOO's waving flag that is)
This is a humor thread! Lighten up Francis! :)
Well some people just aren't funny Clyde.:)

please jog my old memory, who are Clyde and Francis? I remember Francis the talking mule.
The Possum passed away today. Considered one of the greatest country songs ever...
One of the saddest, too. When I was a kid, I didn't understand the song's story, b/c I never listened closely to it. Heard it maybe 5 years ago and it hit me like a ton of bricks when I got that he stopped loving her because he finally died. Wow.
I've always been more of a Johnny Cash and Waylon n' Willie guy for country music, but George Jones was an extraordinary talent and that is a great song. Packs a punch.
Me too! And don't call me a weenie. I've never even been to Vienna.
OK, I'll just call you a brat. Wurst one I've ever seen. ;)

Over the years it get more expensive and the test gets tougher, 10 years ago getting a Citizenship was $400 and I had a permanent green card that cost nothing. Now the Green card is $400 and the Citizenship is $650 and the test went from 60 questions to over a 100. The last election was a "Debbie Downer" that pulled the trigger, I have several Irish friends that I am now convincing to get it done...
I also found out it is more expensive for the govt to turn someone down, vs approval.... so at the moment it's an expensive 6 month cakewalk for me, Living paycheck to paycheck over here.

They added questions like name two senators or name someone from the house of representatives in your state. There are more questions about history and slavery, so quite a bit of memorization of names, dates, etc. Who is the current chief justice? Before a high school American History Class was all that was needed.

I thought it was "right turn Clyde"?

Geez, I feel sort of bad that anyone would view me in that light. Can't remember being threatening to anyone.

You need to watch the movie. It's funny. Bill Murray and John Candy. :D
OK, we got two potentials for Francis, the talking horse and psycho guy from Stripes. So who is Clyde?
All I can think of is Bonnie's partner in crime, youth baseball phenom from the 70s David Clyde, the guy who worked with J. Edgar Hoover, the guy who played electric bass, and Clint Eastwood's orangutan.

Don't forget Harold Ramis and Warren Oates. One of my favorite parts is at the beginning when his girlfriend is trying to throw away his old records (or something like that), and Bill Murray goes off on a rant about Ike and Tina are going to make a comeback. Well sure enough a few years later Tina Turner (without Ike) becomes like the hottest singer around. You got to love it when a movie unknowingly predicts the future.

So perhaps Waylon was singing about Clint Eastwood's friend (pet). Isn't it great how we are able to connect all the dots here in the cafe.

Like I said, no reference to anybody, R called me Francis and Clyde was the first name to pop into my mind. Of course if he thinks he resembles the orangutan I will not argue with him.

J. J. Cale did the song too, where I heard it. Not sure who wrote it.
