Spent the morning running the dogs on the horse trails at the barn, I was hiking, my girlfriend was on horseback.
Then I went out for a few hours to hike/play in the snow on the Paugussett, one of our local Connecticut "Blue" trails. I was surprised to see that I wasn't the first set of food prints in the snow on the trail, there were two sets of tracks ahead of me, one human, one canine.
After an hour and change I came across a heavyset fellow in jeans, sneakers and a sweatshirt with his very happy dog in tow, both of whom were hiking at a speed that put my already fast pace to shame. They had turned around to head back to their house, which is the only reason I caught up with them!
When I got back home I found my girlfriend preparing some venison which is now cooking in the oven after first having been braised in cast iron and drown in red wine.
All in all it was a good day.

Making my pecan pie recipe (brown, white sugar, molasses, karo, vanilla, bourbon, pinch of salt, pecans) and putting all the ingredients except the eggs in a nalgene - - I'm going to put it in my pack later this week (along with 2-3 eggs in a little egg holder thing) along with some bisquick. After burning a nice fire down to coals, I'm going to make a bisquick pie crust (using a fuel bottle as a rolling pin), grease up the Banks Fry Bake, add the eggs to my mix and pour in. I'm then going to put the lid on, place it in the coals and shovel some hot coals on top (along with a little stick fire) and serve it to my friends (may end up being breakfast). If it doesn't work, I'm taking two gallon zip-locks to haul the whole mess out. Yall think it will work? Ideas from the Cafe Chefs?

Did you ever have one of those "Backcountry Ovens" - - when they were around, I was on an exclusive diet of ramen, peanut butter, potatoes and oatmeal - thought they were silly - now, I'd like to try one (just for a weekend trip or something)

a few days in from resupply when you can make pizza is a real morale boost. It's basically a fry pan with a lid, heat diffuser & fiberglass dome.
oh - yeah - that's what I meant to say. "outback oven" - - I forgot what they were called - - sort of a collapsable box thing - like a sideways wood burning stove, right?

We tried making pizza on one of those Bakepacker ovens once. It was awful! The crust was like vulcanized, while the sauce was still cold. I don't think it was user error since we bought their packaged mix & followed directions to the letter. Took that sucker back to REI at the first opportunity.

Since Coffee Rules refuses to carry PapaD, maybe he can be persuaded to hike in a deep fat fryer set instead.

As for Wannabe - I have him on IGNORE. People that post stuff like that are not looking for help, they are beyond help. I just don't have time to read posts from mean people. I think that's fair.
I was surprised when someone suggested he should come here to the Café... I don't need the drama.

Might look at something along those lines when we move house but power failures around here are uncommon and not usually for long.
Normally an excuse to go shopping.
Our power company pay us a penalty (about $80) if power off for more than 24 hours (I think).
We got one payment from them last year.
No other power failures for more than half an hour for years.

How many Virginians that grow the stuff smoke it?
I think most of the Virginia tobacco is exported for really cheap cigarettes.
Smoking is banned practically everywhere here.
Public transport, shopping centres, the entire grounds of hospitals, your own car if you have children in it....you get the drift.
Cigarettes are HEAVILY taxed.
I believe a packet of 25 costs about $20 ($1OZ =$1.04US).
Also we now have "plain packaging" laws.
All packets only have standard font name, a green colour and gruesome pictures of what smoking can do to you.
