I suspect his book on AT is closer to reality than his one on Oz.
Love his work generally but didn't like his book on us. Saw too many flaws in his facts.
That seems to be the rap on Bryson, great writer, but people often do not enjoy when he writes about something they really know about because he is so often "factually challenged" (and perhaps he also gets under their skin).

I think I have caused Daniel to have a strange taste in music for his age.
He often listens to my "fuddy duddy" radio stations even when on his own.
Funny... :) How old is Daniel, Oz?

Jim Webb used to hang out in MacArthur park with Linda Rondstadts' sister, Susan.
They broke up and then he composed the song.
The sixties and seventies were about a lot of serious love and not just free love. Movies like "Butterflies are Free", "Sweet November", and "Love Story" had a lot of influence on me even though I was just a kid when I watched them. Not sure what might influence the sentiment of kids today.
I just hear the other day that "Your so vain" wasn't about Warren Beatty after all, so I guess Trivia Pursuit was wrong.

I shouldn't tell this story, but, I'll start be saying you couldn't find a better mother than my wife, but, our youngest son was being a real jerk running around in a clothing store and she grabbed him by the arm and tried to "straighten" him out. My wife heard two ladies standing nearby say something like, "parents like that shouldn't have children", she shoved him towards them and said, "you want him, you take him", the look on thier faces....priceless.
You're right. That's priceless. (LOL)

Rasty, wow that was great!!! Makes me really miss the late 70s. Blondie was one of my favorites crusing with the old 8 Track in High Schol (along with Bob Seger Stranger in Town, and Rolling Stones Some Girls). Hey I know I may be getting old, but there is still the music to take you back.
Absofreakinlutely!

We bought a 60's RCA Victor console that looks like a bookshelf/china cabinet and it had a 8track built in. When my tape wouldn't play, i started fooling around with it. I removed a tab from the inside that said this tab must be removed before use. Sweet! I have a never been used 8track. Having a hard time finding the tapes. Craigslist I guess.
I had to repack my boss' long time girlfriend's stuff up (death months ago & he still can't deal with it) & came across dozens of 8-Tracks!
HAH! about 20 years ago, my sis-in -law (hubby's sister), decided to clean out an outbuilding at their parents house. And proceeded to leave boxes of 8-tracks in front of our door while we were gone. Had to move them before we could get in the door. Not all were hubby's-- some were her's (or so he claimed!) Iron butterfly he owned up to :D
was hitchin' outa gatlinburg one year and got picked up by a gal in a 73 gran torino that had a factory 8 track. we rocked out all the way to newfound gap
Sweet! bought a falcon ranchero with a factory one, and a tape in it still. Now how many years ago, I dunno. I have slept since then.

Gran Torino was an awesome movie. Love the torino's! And in case you haven't figured it out, I like fast cars. :D
Just thinking how quick things change these days. Vinal records were 40 years, cassettes, 10-15, 8-Track 5-10? CD, DVD,Blue Ray

My first car was a 1966 Chevy Corvair. It could keep up with the trucks in the swamp. It had a solid bottom and floated. It could even float across some canals the big trucks wouldn't touch. I'd just get a running start, hit the water and glide across. You could see the water churn from the tires while I was gassing it. I'd get to the other side and it bite good ground and climb right out. We won a lot of money bettin' on that car.
This one's a natural given, a classic if you will.
My old muscle car came up at 2:40. The car I'm gonna get when we sell our patent for a coupla million came up at 3:07.

I got sandwiched between 2 cars at a red light. The car in front and I was stopped and the car that hit us from behind was running 45 and slammed us. I was scrunched like an accordian. We got rid of the front hood which was the trunk and turned it into the suicide seat. We cut the roof off with a blow torch and made it a redneck convertible. We'd put someone in that suicide seat and drive like hell off road in the woods. They'd almost bounce out. It's a wonder nobody died.

i dont know. im reading all these threads about shelters, etiquette and the like and i just dont get it. i dont experience all this bickering and arguing in our neck of the woods and farther north. is this a southern phenomena?everywhere ive hiked in the northeast people have alwaysgotten along. ive smoked, others have smoked, others have drank, ive hung my food when everyone else did and slept with it when i tented.i was playing guitar at a shelter and a woman from 3 pair of weekenders that were using the shelter called out that it was getting late (8pm) and they wanted to sleep as they had a tough day ahead of them. we laughed i called back no problem and that was the end of it.
now i dont know if some of these people have actually stayed at shelters, but im getting a picture of the south as a very intolerant environment where fights at shelters can erupt at any second.whats the deal?

i dont know. im reading all these threads about shelters, etiquette and the like and i just dont get it. i dont experience all this bickering and arguing in our neck of the woods and farther north. is this a southern phenomena?everywhere ive hiked in the northeast people have alwaysgotten along. ive smoked, others have smoked, others have drank, ive hung my food when everyone else did and slept with it when i tented.i was playing guitar at a shelter and a woman from 3 pair of weekenders that were using the shelter called out that it was getting late (8pm) and they wanted to sleep as they had a tough day ahead of them. we laughed i called back no problem and that was the end of it.
now i dont know if some of these people have actually stayed at shelters, but im getting a picture of the south as a very intolerant environment where fights at shelters can erupt at any second.whats the deal?
 Why are you singling out the south? Mr. Coffee started the whole thing, and he's from Connecticut.
I just found out I have some credits left on that argument gift card, yippee!

im not singling out the south. maybe the north is less crowded? i dont think thats the case, just less thru hikers.in 36 yaears of hiking evryone at every site ive stayed at got along. everyone.somebody was pi**ing someone off, someone would say to cut it out and that would be it.i still think most of this occurs only in cyberland(but never at the cafe),,but still i dont find it an issue up here.at all.

It's not "the South", actually, it's a narrow band of the trail starting exactly 46 miles from Springer and going North for another 86 miles, after which you skip exactly 16 miles and it all starts again for another 7 miles, and then it all calms down and everybody loves everybody. Also, Southerners are more likely to pull out automatic weapons and blow away anybody who is rude or correct about anything having to do with guns, religion, or pop tarts. So please, quit being rude, racist, and stereotypical and fetch me an Evian. We uppercrust hikers will only tolerate so much dissension before we get medieval on you lower class neanderthals. So now let us discuss the exact thickness of sleeping pads allowable in shelters designated as "lean-to"s rather than "huts".....
