Do you think it would have been disastrous due to the temp or the inability to swim - or both?

wide river + floating ice patches + rapids + low temps
We could swim, but not that well in freezing water. There was ice forming on our paddles and air bags as we paddled.

i just hope you get a good weather window. late july t storms are the daily norm, settles down a bit more in august.you'll get plenty of stretches like what you saw in the acadia vid, and spectacular ridgeline walking with mountains all around stretcing to the horizon.theyre difficult and challenging, but worth every ounce of effort.

Not scared, more like unbelievably cold, miserable, and p*ssed off at myself, the hubby, and the trip leader for even being there in the first place. We had plenty of experience paddling whitewater by then and knew what we were doing, but the consequences of screwing up would have been very unpleasant if you couldn't get the swimmer out real quick. We actually had a swimmer (a kayaker) but it was real close to the end, and we managed to get out pretty soon afterward. The problem with taking a swim in cold weather, is it kind of sets you up for additional swims - you get chilled, you lose coordination, get a little clumsy, messing up again is very likely.

So in terms of best weather chances, would it be better to time our hike after August 12? Or do part of it before the 12th, cut out in time for the prom, and then go back? We don't have a firm date set yet and can be a little flexible since we're driving and doing a combination of day hiking & backpacking. I would much prefer to weigh the odds in favor of good weather. Mountain Mike, and Mountain Smike, please chime in with your opinions on this :D

The reason I ask is because I was knocked off a Hobie Cat sail boat one time. The boom hit me square in the back and hurt like hell. Middle of the ocean about 11-12 miles out. Couldn't see land and lost sight of the boat. Seas were running about 3 -6. I had on a jacket and head gear, surf temp was about 82 degrees. Sounds nice doesn't it. Well it didn't take long to start thinking stupid stuff. I knew I was gonna die out there. I knew sharks were gonna eat me or I was gonna die of hypothermia. After about an hour I was getting real cold, thank God I caught site of the boat. I knew they saw me when they started tacking away and reversed their direction abruptly. It was another 45 min. before they picked me up. I felt frozen to death. I was scared. I have the deepest respect for the ocean.

The water at the distance out where you were was probably significantly cooler than 82 degrees:

From www.boatingbasicsonline.com:
Hypothermia does not only occur in extremely cold water. It can, and does, occur even in the warmer waters of Florida and the Bahamas.

When I lived in Montana people couldn't wait for the spring melt on the Yellowstone. Canoers and Kayakers out in the floating ice and trees. Summer the Yellowstone was mild and peaceful. Come spring it was raging in parts. Every year half a dozen or so souls lost to it's lure. Just like hunting season, every year a couple of hunters found frozen sitting against a tree. But just like the song, there's nothing like springtime in Montana.

JAK
01-27-2013, 22:45
JAK,

Be careful if you go that time of year. A lot of cold air gets funneled down the river valley by whatever weather system passes through, and the weather can change quickly. The river is wide and water levels are typically higher that time of year also, which potentially adds to the difficulty.

Years ago, a group of us went to paddle a couple of sections up to & including the confluence at Harpers Ferry. it was the first weekend in April and the redbuds were in full bloom. we arrived at the campground with temps around 60 degrees, and woke up with 2" of snow on our tents and 35 degrees. We paddled anyway, like idiots. There were sections clogged with large patches of ice requiring more scouting than normal, which created less than ideal lines left open through the rapids. I was fully outfitted in the proper clothing, and still thought I'd freeze to death. If we'd flipped, we would have been in real trouble.

Try to contact a local outfitter to get their input on the best river/trail access points.

Btw, it's a beautiful float in May, there's usually still some water, and there's a couple of sections with some neat, small caves. It will definitely make a great dad/daughter trip if everything comes together just right. :)Thanks for that. Definitely will watch the weather and water levels and water temperatures. We practice re-entry even in cold water. If you aren't prepared to swim, your not really prepared to paddle is what I tell her. My background was small boat sailing so capsizing and self-rescue has become rather ingrained. Definitely watch the water levels though. If we can't be paddling upstream, we won't be paddling downstream. Two boats. One is her training k1, 16' x 13", which she can self-rescue and re-enter in deep rough water. The other is a custom built K 1.5, which we can paddle as a tandem and I can paddle as a solo, also closed in enough and designed for self-rescue and re-entry in deep rough water. It's a bit of an odd shape. 21' x 21" but wider at the back, extra narrow up front for her paddling form. Still in the building. She is 85 pounds I am 215 pounds.

Do you paddle upstream against small rapids? On the Shenandoah, there are both long, flat sections and sections with class I-II at minimum levels. The rapids are ledge type. Some are remnants of old native American fish traps.

Gave written notice to boss last week.

Yep, me and TW MM is on but haven't seen him in a while.
Must be hard keeping your eyes open.
I've decided to call Mike M&M with his new persona aka twin.

Good for you. When I retired I felt a little weird at first. I kept having this feeling that I should be doing something. At times it even felt like I was doing wrong, like I wasn't gonna make it. Then it went away and now I don't ever want to work again. i don't understand those people that go back to work cause they're bored. Hell I'll go to the park and talk to the ducks before that happens. (LOL)

what's a union? In the US we just take whatever an employer gives us and are greatful tht they don't charge us for the job experience. ;)

Hey everybody, my wife is hand-crafting everbody in the cafe a little something. It's not much but it's something she wants to do and share. TW and hubby, Oz and Daniel and MM you'll get yours right away and everbody else will get theirs as I meet them. HM at Trail Days and everbody else at the prom. Just her way of friendship.
Hey Oz, my wife wants to bring your and Daniels and M&M's to Dahlonaga.

I just merge the two at this stage.
Work tomorrow and then Wed off for visa I/V.
After that only 20 more working days (plus 2 weekend overtimes) and I'm finished with work.
About 3 weeks after that I'm in Georgia!

It's crazy exciting, isn't it?

I finished work yesterday. I'm sitting here with nothing to do. I'd hike, but it's snowing and I don't want to break my leg right now, for some odd reason.

Nothing to do, and not really worried about it. This is the oddest feeling ever. Later I'm planning to spread everything out and surgically remove some grams from my gear weight.

All the final gear sorting is a lot of what fills leaving work 27th Feb and Oz on 16th March.
Not paying any attention to gear at present.
Too hot and too busy to hike or exercise so I'm just sitting here watching my waistline.
It's out where I can see it.

Just ordered TarpTent from Henry Shires.
Already have one but Daniel and I are carrying one each so I thought I'd better not leave it any longer.

I think I would have to use the front yard and take the photo from my roof.
I am not going to post "complete gear list" type entries.
The only exception is I think I will post photos and maybe a YouTube vid of everything I get to Katahdin with.
Not enough of those posts for me and they are much more insightful than what people start with.

If your familiar with the title I mention "The Complete Walker", here is a long standing question I've had. In the cover picture of his book, there is all the gear laid out...complete with a copy of said book in picture. It's hard to see but on that little picture of the book within the photo, is a picture of the book....how'd they do that...It's like that which came first the chicken or the egg thing.1931019311

Revision of the original question: All things being equal, how would this be possible....as the gear is obviously a wee bit different.

Woah. Another black-hole physics-defying problem. Like hiding a thread about how to hide threads.

The space-time continuum, it weeps.I saw that thread, no I didn't.

Good idea.

I never read the book....what's with the life jacket?

So you are expecting a thief to follow the rules?
Reminds me a bumper sticker my dad had when I was little, If you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have guns.

Or even more. :)

Do you think I'd look good with a mullet?:D

Compared to the rest of us here, you would look good with any type of haircut. Personally though I would leave the mullet to Billy Ray.
Willie Robertson (Duck Dynasty) came to speak at Harding back in November. They showed a picture of him with his mullet when he was in school here back in the 90s. Quite a bit different from you see now on A&E or the Outdoor channel.

Deactivated my Facebook page last week.
Never used it except to read my kids ones to see what they were up to.;)
Got sick of how many friends I could find....

Oz, sick of how many friends you "could find" or "could not find". Or was it the ones who found you (that you would rather not have). :-?

I just merge the two at this stage.
Work tomorrow and then Wed off for visa I/V.
After that only 20 more working days (plus 2 weekend overtimes) and I'm finished with work.
About 3 weeks after that I'm in Georgia!

I am sure the anticipation is awesome! I remember when I would take overseas assignments (Brazil, Singapore, China, Germany), I would be counting the days before I left. Of course after nearly a year somewhere I would wake up counting the days until I went back home. I even had a little song, "only x days of waking up in xxxxx". Always looking forward to the next adventure, I believe is the best way to live life. :sun

Take a before (Springer) and after picture (Katahdin). Now that is something people could really learn from.

Yeah, the first few years (well maybe 10) MTV came out, they actually played Videos. In college back then we did not have MTV, but did watch videos on the weekend on either TBS or TNT. It was something we looked forward to back then. My how the world has changed in 30 years.
