While listening to our local public radio I heard "Appalachian Spring Suite" by Aaron Copland.
It really felt like on the trail.
It's in the second hour of Performance Today - listen at:

A lesser-known fact is that Aaron Copland didn't have the Appalachians in mind at all when he composed Appalachian Spring; the title was given retroactively and it comes from the lines of a Hart Crane poem. Like you, and like Copland himself, I think it evokes the region, but I wonder how much we'd be saying that if "Appalachian Spring" wasn't the title. Food for thought.

"Copland readily admitted that the pastoral beauty of Appalachia wasn’t on his mind when he wrote the score: “I gave voice to that region without knowing I was giving voice to it.”"

+1 I especially like the Ed Abbey reference at the end.

I suggest anything by Faun, Laura Sullivan, Omnia, and Korpiklaani, or just some good old folk music. I always thought the music by those bands fit very well into moments of my assorted trips and adventures, to the point where I nigh-instinctively turn them on at certain points of my forest. Trying to avoid getting too sentimental or pretentious like those thrice-damned comments you see on Youtube, I generally think Faun's music fits for heavy travelling and tucking in at night, Unda specifically, Laura Sullivan's music is good for those moments when you find one of those wonders of the natural world like a massive tree or waterfall, Omnia has a nice feel for night travels, and Korpiklaani fits best for coming into a new trailhead or shelter and fraternizing with all the hikers there, possibly with alcohol and dancing involved.
