Read "The Best Way" by Bill Walker, also the movie "The Way" with Martin Sheen.

If you can find contact info for 2011 thru-hiker Hippy Kippy, he's done it many times with students in his capacity as a religion professor. He'd be a fantastic person to talk to, about anything really.
"The Way" is on streaming Netflix. Pretty decent movie actually.

Somehow, I didn't think I would like the movie as I thought it would be too depressing. Actually loved it.
