Is the venerable ridge runner still in action? He has to be like 80 now.
Good question...I want to know too.
He greeted hikers in the GSNP and also met him at Springer Mt Shelter one year.

I think he was 72 when I met him on the Trail in '02---living in SC--kept up with him for a few years. Don't know if he is still around. Hope so. He was a fine person.
I think he might have died. or retired to a rest home.
He was the Springer Mtn caretaker up until 2010, retiring in 2011. Now "Many Walks" aka John, is the Springer Mtn caretaker from Feb-April, then he takes his time wandering up to Maine where he is the ME Ridge Runner at Abol.
i didn't see him at either place, didn't hear people talking about him either.

I'm glad I got to meet Many Sleeps before he retired. He was gonna be my first must-take pic on my thru next year. Now it will be Many Walks.
Anyone got any pics of Many Sleeps?
I met Many Sleeps on the Approach Trail a few years ago, just shy of Springer. He was heading down to the shelter to check on it. Unfortunately, I informed him that there was a substantial amount of trash left there, tents, air mattresses, jackets, etc. He wasn't surprised, implied that was fairly normal. Too bad.
Hope he's enjoying his retirement.
