Just putting it out here. I am planning a 2013 thru hike starting in march from Crown Point to ND. Going solo spare a partner or two for less than 300mi. A few questions I have concerning the trail
1. why so far south in Ohio. By cutting along the northern section of the buckeye trail you can save almost $45 on maps and it adds to the "northcountry" part of the trail. Unforutunatly it shaves almost almost 350 miles off the trail.
2. Is it still considered a thru hike if i canoe the borderlands trail and if i were to cut across the northern bit of ohio? seeing as there are only 3ppl that -have end-end it I am not looking for something that can be held against my attempt.
If anyone else is planning an end-end post back and we can get in touch and exchange beta. Insight into my q's also much appreciated.

Cheers

You could start here... http://northcountrytrail.org/for-long-distance-hikers/ There is I think a thru-hiker committee they have which sets rules for them to recognize it such as you have to cross this Michigan Mackinac bridge at the one day it's open to foot traffic, which sounds ridiculous to me but I believe that's the case.

I would contact Joan Young here for more info: http://northcountrytrailnews.blogspot.com/ That is her blog and I'm sure her email's there too.

I don't know the answer to your questions precisely, but it seems to me that if you're talking about skipping parts of the trail to make it go quicker, I don't see how that would be a thru-hike. But thru-hiking the NCT is difficult and there is a lot of subjectivity as it's not anywhere close to complete.

Of course not. Heck of a hike, tho.

Why would you want to canoe in the Boundary Waters instead of hiking the Border Route Trail.
The BRT is a spectacular Trail

Check out my photos of it at http://sites.google.com/site/isawtman/

Don't let anyone take something away from your thru-hike, if you want to aqua-blaze, paddle on brother! Look at their thru-hike application see what the fine print says.

I will be living relatively close to the trail in Western Michigan. Shoot me a PM and we can talk about taking a zero on a lake with Stand Up Paddle boards, sail boats, yaks, and canoes!

isawtman- I know it is such a beautiful area. But am a paddler by trade and was originally planning a canoe trip down the Mississippi and around Florida but decided to try my hand at walking and diverted my funds. However, renting a canoe and re-outfitting myself mid trip is proving to be quite a (costly)challenge and am considering the BRT. Great pictures by the way, getting me so amped up about my tip!

Hello solestrutter. I also am planning a thru-hike of the NCT in 2013, but from ND to VT (I'm filling in the 50 mile gap to the AT).
To answer some of your questions, 1. I am not positive on this but I believe the reason the trail goes so far south in Ohio is because the northern tier of the Buckeye Trail is incredibly flat and boring and the southern route has lots of terrain and interesting features (Dayton, Hocking Hills, Serpent Mound) as well as much more public land. I believe the only benefit the northern route would have is that it follows along the shore of Lake Erie for a distance. 2. The Long Distance Hiking Committee released a set of guidelines last January for thru-hikers of the NCT. It does not count as a thru-hike if you skip sections. The link can be found on the NCT website, it goes into alot of detail.
If you would like to talk trail feel free to get in touch with me.

Unfortunately due to an ACL injury acquired this summer I am not able to complete a hike. I have however teamed up with Wounded Warrior Project (http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/) and am circumnavigating Newfoundland by sea kayak. You can follow my blog (http://seamekayak.wordpress.com/) or like me on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Seamekayak-Expeditions/107976489365814). Safe travels to all!

for others who may be reading this and thinking of this hike; buy a map when going thru eastfork lake in southern ohio. The $2 is well worth the investment.
