I am doing a section hike this weekend and will probly end one of my days at or near 19E. Just trying to find out if there are any campsites just north of 19E within a couple of miles. If not, I understand that the Apple House shelter is no more--can I camp there and is there any water? Or is that not advisable? I prefer not to go to the Mountain Harbour ($$) to stay. Thanks for any info.

About 1-1/2 miles north at sugar hollow creek. I planning to camp there on my trip from Roan to Partnership shelter in September.

Good camping at former Apple House Shelter-good water (remember to treat because of cow pastures further up)

Whoa... that is going to be a very nice hike, R...are you making your way, up the trail, going North? As in, doing the trail in sections?

From what I understand the old Apple House site will be turned into platforms. Some of the reasons why the shelter was removed was because it was too close to a major road and had been known to be a party spot in the summer.

But there is Mountain Harbour B&B. They run a hostel and allow some camping in the corral.

Camping north of 19E is a little tricky as you are travelling behind lots of private property until the Elk River. Bishops Hollow and High Point has a couple possible sites. But most of the water up along Bear Branch and Bishop Hollow is contaminated. You really don't get to any decent sites until Sugar Hollow Creek site next to the Elk Eiver. Mountaineer Shelter and a blueblaze site are just further up.

You might find an old logging road on approach to Jones Falls.

I have no plan. One vacation is Shining Rock another is the AT and another was the Adirondacks.

I second giving Apple House a pass - was there two weeks ago, the place is a dump and appears to still be frequented by local teens

Recommend camping at Mountain Harbor. Don't know the going rate, but the camp spots behind the barn, along the creek are very nice. Camping within a mile or so either side of 19E is probably not a good choice.

I was walking out there last month and a kid was walking around with a bow and arrows "in case he ran into a bear". I think you'd have to get off a pretty good first shot.

Chief, when we going hiking again?

Thanks,
SeatbeltIts right beside the trail and does have a small sign. Go past Jones Falls, and you will arrive at Elk River. Walk along the river for a short bit, and you come to a small hill top before crossing a creek joining the river. The hilltop is the campsite. GPS: 36.2080959, -81.980002

There is also a small blue blaze just south of Mountaineer Falls. Just climb up to hill top to a small campsite.

Seatbelt - I looked again and it's 5 miles from 19E not 1-1/2. It's 1-1/2 miles past Campbell Hollow Road. There is a 0.1mile side trail to Jones Falls.

Shortly after descending to the Elk River you'll come to a nice little shaded campsite with a fire ring and a narrow path down to the water. You might prefer this to Sugar Hollow. It's fully exposed and a bit overgrown (at least it was when I last passed through).

Doll Flats, leaves you a short hike down to 19E. Great view and awesome camping with water
