I have a client who contracted Lyme disease recently. He is receiving conflicting advice re treatment. Does anyone know who is considered the leading authority on this disease? Thank you.

His primary MD wants him to go slow and easy on the antibiotics. Another doctor wants him to take high dosage antibiotics within a short amount of time (three weeks) through IV to get all the bacteria and any co-infections. He caught it early and had the classic red bull's eye, along with chills, fever, and even Bells Palsy for a spell. He is lethargic. He is torn between to camps. Would appreciate names of any specialists or clinics. Geography not an issue. Thanks.

See the CDC site for treatment advise and appropriate supplemental links:

http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/diagnosistreatment/Treatment/

Also, the American Lyme Disease Foundation may be able to help:

Doctors clashing over Lyme Disease treatments was the subject of a recent Wall Street Journal article:

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Some doctors don't want to treat Lyme aggressively.
I'd contact you local lyme disease support group (most areas have them that have high Lyme activity) for info on doctors.
Or contact adlf for a recommendation.
I had it last year, did 3 weeks of 100mg Doxycycline twice a day while I was thru-hiking.
