I'm planning to marry my sweetheart on Charlies Bunion. We need to figure out which state it's in in order to do the appropriate paperwork (i.e marriage licence). Anyone know for sure?

When in the Smokies you never really know which side of the line you're on; I'd have to check my maps, but that might not even tell, but I'm sure someone here knows the answer. Generally speaking you crap on the NC side and get water on the Tenn. side of the line :D

My assumption is when you go left (such as Charlie's Bunnion) you are in TN, and to the right is NC. The trail may not be 100% on the state line through GSMNP, but it is probably close enough enough of the time to use that as a quick rule of thumb.

This seems to say it's in NC http://northcarolina.hometownlocator.com/maps/feature-map,ftc,1,fid,1019609,n,charlies%20bunion.cfm

Wiki doesn't say, it just says it's on the line http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlies_Bunion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlies_Bunion states: the northern rocky face is the TN side and the southern face is NC.

I was looking into this subject when I was looking at Roan Mtn as a wedding location for myself but ended up having it in Wilkes County. NC is not very strict on the marriage licenses. You basically can register in any NC county as long as you perform the ceremony in NC and mail/turn in the completed license to the same county office.

But I believe NC license is cheaper...only $60. Tennessee is $90.

Just to cover your butt, you can perform it at the rocks on the TN side. And walk over to the NC side and do a quick wording on the NC side. Then you just have your officiator sign it as a NC location. You can state for location Appalachian Trail/Smokies National Park. It's not exactly like they are requesting an exact GPS coordinate.

A GPS might just tell you what State you are in. The real good GPS's are even used by surveyors.

Excellent question. It raises the issue of when a couple actually changes from single to married. Prince Humperdinck would have us believe that it's when the officiant says "man and wife." but the dread pirate (Wesley) roberts would argue it's when you say "I do." The states of TN & NC would say it's when the officiant & witnesses sign the marriage license. So it's simple: get a marriage license from the state of your choice. Get married at Charlie's Bunion without any concern for where the state line is. The license is typically signed shortly after the ceremony, so the officiant & witness take several steps in the correct direction & sign it. Bride & groom don't sign, for their info will have been entered on the license at the clerk's office. The officiant can say, "in accordance with the laws of the great state of ..." regardless of where s/he says it from. Just use the state name of the license, & no one will ever question it, or have grounds to.
Enjoy . . and pray for good weather!

Yes!! :) My daughter and I were there, just a few weeks ago and noticed fairly fresh rose petals all over Charlie's Bunion. Such a pretty place!!

Trimble Outdoors Mytopo Maps is an iPad app. It shows the AT passing just south of Charlie's Bunion.

http://www.listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=108476 shows that it is on the TN-NC state line, which in this area is the height-of-land. The smaller peak directly on the trail is sometimes referred to as the Fodderstack.
