I know Tom Hennessey sells an oversize fly now, but has anyone tried using a regular 8x10 foot tarp? I have a silnil tarp with grommets in the corners. It seems like on the diagonal that should be about perfect. it bigger than the standard fly that came with the hammock but a lot lighter than the oversize one Hennessey sells. Anyone try it? Any advice?

Yeah, 8 X 10 works great, but I don't use it on the diagonal.

I purchased the oversized fly for my Expedition Asym and am VERY glad I did. It provides a ton more coverage and peace of mind....Check out the difference between the standard fly and the oversized version:

Standard: http://home.cogeco.ca/~most.recent.trip/slides/DSCN0341_edited%20(Medium).JPG

Oversized: http://home.cogeco.ca/~most.recent.trip/slides/DSCN0339%20(Medium).JPG

The oversized fly provides enough coverage to sit, cook, store gear etc, and also gives more coverage on each end of the hammock (nice to hang stuff, etc... http://home.cogeco.ca/~most.recent.trip/slides/Img0105%20(Medium).JPG )

I've got the original "ultralight HH" (pre-asym) and have the old smaller fly, which is one of the reasons I stopped using the hammock. I like the looks of that HH oversized fly. How does it compare in terms of price with the jacksrbetter tarp at $80 ?? ...and how do those 2 options compare in weight ??

I was thinking about getting one of those 8 oz, 8x10 Spinn Twin Tarps from Gossamer Gear as a replacement for the HH fly. Has anyone here tried one of those?

not much coverage, but i have never got wet,but wet, with the jacksrbetter 8x8 tarp you plenty of room for cooking loungeing, getting your gear out of the rain
an excellent tarp on the ground alone. neo

Thanks Neo ...I'm going to look at both the HH and the jacksrbetter before making any decisions. I'm a "fair weather" tree dweller these days. I got caught in my hammock several times in extreme winds/rain and cold weather and I've tried most, if not all of the cold weather adaptations but just can't see the benefit. I love sleeping in my hammock but for me it's become a pretty much a 2 season shelter. That said ...I would like to get my hands on a better fly.

To Neo,, or anyone else who knows,,,,,,,, The exact weight of the HH Hex fly--silnylon version. Neo said it was 1#,, but the HH website says this lighter silnylon hex fly is 19 oz. Any clarification on this? Thanks!
