So I saw this windscreen on the home page photos and was wondering where I can get one. I know it was a 'make your own' thing, but I'm too busy with school to mess around with it. Thanks...TW

I don't know where you can get that exact model, but try Anti-Gravity Gear for something similar.

Looks home made. Try this one, REAL easy to make...

Yes, if you are willing to buy one instead of make it, then he/she might be willing. Looks like it wouldn't require a lot of hard work or expensive material. You might want to see if you can substitute a couple of stakes for the wire though.

The OP already stated no interest in making one and seemed in the market. I've heard the maker of that windscreen's a pretty nice guy, despite what Weary says about him.

Stakes were the first prototype, I didn't like them. They're either just something else to carry or you have to borrow them from your other gear. Then after many heating and cooling cycles the stakes softened and wouldn't hold their shape when pressed into the ground. I went with the picture hanging wire because one end is always attached to the body of the windscreen and the other is easy to set, even if wearing gloves. All you need are two twigs, and the woods around here are full of them.

I assume you were using aluminum stakes. I can see how that would happen especially if the stakes were in a cross pattern. Did you try going straight across slightly to the side so you made two "shelves" that would be out of the flame pattern? Seems that even with wire this would be more effective since you could use shorter support wires or stakes.

I tried both but preferred the crossing pattern because (1) there's no way a pot edge can tilt between the wires, just one less thing to worry about. (2) you can use the windscreen/pot stand with any pot or metal cup of the same or smaller diameter as your main pot. Maybe not so with the two shelves.

The wires also add structural integrity to the windscreen - they keep it from pulling apart. The bottom edge of the flashing can also be pressed into the ground to level the pot and add a little more stability.

Something else to notice is that under load (from the pot) the edges of the windscreen are in compression - the two edges of the seam press together. Other designs I've seen use bends on each edge that hook together. That would work great if the seam were under tension - trying to pull apart - but it's not. And the hooks tend to get a bit twisted and mangled with use, been there done that. The design shown has a very flat "Z" fold to form a slot on one end, the other edge is simply cut straight and slides into the slot. There's a pic in my gallery. Again, it can be done with gloves on.

Hey thanks all! I think that I'm going to make one myself this summer. More fun that way and I can customize it.
