The following NOAA website has a list of phone numbers for recorded weather forecasts. There are several numbers for Maine.

Take a piece of string and hang your phone from a tripod made of tree limbs.

If the phone is wet, it's raining.
If the phone is swinging, the wind is blowing.
If the phone casts a shadow, the sun is shining.
If the phone does not cast a shadow and is not wet, the sky is cloudy.
If the phone is not visible, it is foggy.
If the phone is white, it is snowing.
If the phone is coated with ice, there is a frost.
If the ice is thick, it's a heavy frost.
If the phone is bouncing, there is an earthquake.
If the phone is under water, there is a flood.
If the phone is warm, it is sunny.
If the phone is missing, there was a tornado.
If the phone is wet and swinging violently, there is a hurricane.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

great reply Cleaner, that's a winner.

I will add this - when you stick the radio on a weak AM station and hear light static - the lightening is 50 miles away.
On a strong AM station its 10-15 miles away. As the frequency over time increases its heading towards you if it decreases or remains unchanged - no worrys... No I am not kidding... Years of listening to Am and Shortwave.

When I was out in April a thru hiker took a pic of my radio so he could get one sent to him in Damascus.I go solo most trips and like to do NPR news at supper. Also I've shared many weather reports with thrus or shared recent news events. One hiker wanted Wall St info...

When I was a student pilot, before everyone had a phone with a forecast and radar app, we would call 1-800-WXBRIEF, and speak to a weather forecaster. You just had to tell him where you were going and he would give you the forecast, cloud cover and winds aloft for the area. Try telling him you'll just be around the "Town X" area... see what they say.

When I wasn't able to get a phone call to work, I found that text messaging would still work sometimes. I used the "on demand" option towards the bottom of the above page. It wasn't the greatest, but was better than nothing.

Just text Google's SMS search service at 466453 (GOOGLE) with "w" followed by a zipcode. You'll receive a long text with just about everything you want to know. I used this service for my CT/NY section hike this summer. I added several zipcodes along my route to my hiking plan making it quick and easy to get the zipcode and send an SMS.

My blog post on this getting weather info from Google SMS service:
