Trying to go ultra light but found out that sleeping bag istoo big. It is a Mountain Hardware Piute 20 degree bag that isthe single largest thing in may pack. Hiking the AT in spring and fall. So what is the best configuration bag and liner and what degree of bag?

You want a 20 degree down bag - and since thats what you have - I'd say your pack is too small.

Looking at a deuter act lite 50 +10 bag. Problem as I see it is the bag is a 600 down not 800. Compress to the size of a soccoor ball and valley ball.

I use a 20 degree bag from Golite. I put it in a 10L dry sack. I just stuff it in the bag and try to make it as
flat as I can. it the goes into the pack against my back. I have quit using compression sacks for my down
bag.

that bag is 2lb 9 oz. not bad! try a compression sack or for now try a belt around it to see how much you can compress it. don't thing you will need a liner.
food and bag probably are the 2 biggest things in your pack
PS which pack ya got?

Looking at the Deuter 50 +10 down sizing from Kellty Redcloud. Took the compression sack all the way down. Will most likely get a smaller sized one.

put some clothes in with the bag and see how much more you can compress it.
why the Deuter 50 +10 ? just curious. it's not what i would call ultra lite, but that's just me.

A 20 degree top quilt is only 21 oz. No zipper. The ones Jacks are Better makes can be gathered at the foot end to make a box for the feet. The rest of the quilt can just be pulled around you.

I got one of these for my PCT trip next week. Lighter, smaller, and multi configurable.
