Have the chain link fences been removed from all of the shelters in GSMNP yet?

Last year I heard there was one left on the last shelter in GSMNP but I didn't stop there so I can't say for sure. All the other shelters I stayed at did not have the fences.

Davenport Gap shelter still has the fence.

That is correct. We went by there the end of July. They also had a sign posted that no one was allowed to cook in the shelter. Does anyone know what that is about?

It attracts bears.

No, duh...but why would they not allow cooking in that shelter and not the others that have had real bear problems like Cosby Knob, for instance? I have heard of them closing shelters b4 but never any shelter that didn't allow cooking.

The refurbished shelters now have designated cooking areas (either around the side of the shelter, or at least a bench at the front of the shelter away from the sleeping area). However, they still post rules saying that cooking shouldn't be done in the sleeping area. I think in the case of the shelters with chain link, everything behind the chain link was sleeping area.

BTW, Russle Field was apparently refurbished to remove the chain link within the last year. It looks awesome... well except for all the graffiti that is already on it.

I understand now HooKooDooKu. Thank you so much for explaining that to me. I really like the new shelters with the new cooking bench to the front or sides. We were just quickly passing by Davenport Gap so I didn't have time to figure it all out. The shelter didn't look very inviting, I do remember that.

I have only seen the shelters, in the SMNP, from Icewater to Davenport. Thanks again.
