Ok so I am looking at several devices to charge and add to battery life.

These r what I found so far:
Eton frx3 radio
aqua tek s case
powerpot
biolete stove
various solar panels/batteries

So I figure the only way to keep a full charge is to take a multi angle approach so the radio has solar/hand crank the case has solar(the solar from these I doubt will do much but hey every little bit) they also have batteries the case will add to the battery life and the radio can charge the case/phone/case from its battery. The stove/pot may play into it not sure yet.

So I guess all I am wanting to know is am I mmissing anything and is there any gear like this I am missing or would be better than these?

Please don't rant about light and fast. I have a ul setup that is under 20 lb base weight and setup around 40lb base that I use alot more and a BOB that is more like 60-80lb never weighed it lol.

I use this when I have to have a back up charge for my phone! I can usually keep my phone charged for 4-5 days! Maddog:D

Just leave the phone turned off unless you need to make an emergency call. You'll survive without being connected all day, every day.

I normally do survive without it... I was just wanting to play with it on the trail... Like gps mapping which really drains a battery and also try and do some video work... Granted its not the best device for either but it is a multifunction item.

The Trent line is the way to go, no 2 ways about it.

That said, I just took my iPhone on my Long Trail hike and I kept a charge for 4 days by leaving it on airplane mode and only turning the cellular data on when I needed to make a call.

How do you recharge the Trent line? USB to computer, USB to wall outlet, or both?

Both...

I got the one that'll charge an iphone 3.5 times. I was actually shocked that it did - I figured I'd be lucky to get 2 charges out of it.

+1 on the Trent chargers. I got the 5200 model, 4.2 oz., good for 3.5 charges. Assuming you resupply every 4-5 days, it's just enough to get to the next resupply point where you can charge both the phone and the charger.

I got a 4200 mAh battery that slips on the Iphone like a protector case. I got 7 full days of my kind of use checking the internet, phone, apps, ie out of it. the one thing I read about using these things is don't charge your phone more than 80 percent, that it takes more power to fill up that last 20% of the phone battery. so, I just charged every day from about 35% up to 80%. YMMV, HYOH.

I use a NewTrent IMP120D and it has to be charged from a wall socket. They have models that can be charged from a USB outlet, but they are of lesser capacity. I do wish I could charge mine from a USB connection, but it hasn't been a problem so far.

Here is a gadget that might be useful in recharging your iPhone:

Of course, you would not have to bring a hamster along. Just use one of these (available at any shelter):

This gadget offers a good alternative:

No kidding  ...they really are working on this thing:

Also in development:

Now, if they could put this into a hiking shoe/boot...:-? :) :banana

"I use a NewTrent IMP120D and it has to be charged from a wall socket."

I've found that a lot of batteries/devices that aren't sold with USB rechargers can actually be recharged from a USB wall charger, IF it's powerful, say 2.1 amps, and if you can find or kluge together the right connector.

You might want to look at a kickstarter project that is happening right now called limeade. USB battery that can supposedly recharge an iPhone 12 times

I got the EasyPak online at Amazon and a 'freebie' choice.

Put iPhone on Airplane Mode turn off all Notifications and most Location Services. You should be at a place to recharge phone and battery pack every few days.

REMEMBER that cold weather affects batteries ... keep your phone and battery pack protected from extremes of heat and cold.

I prefer the Anker Astro 5600mAh over the Trent charger. It has a larger capacity (5600 vs 5200), it's lighter (4.0oz vs 5.3), smaller and only costs $29 at Amazon.... plus it has a LED flashlight. I've had mine for well over a year without issue.

Also, the next size Trent battery is 9900mAh weighing 8 ounces. You can use 2 of the Ankers for 1120 mAh for the same weight.

Motion X GPS App for the iPhone is great! I have never had a cellular plan and I have owned an iphone3 and this current iphone4. I use wifi only. Iphone4 holds the last 4 apps used information. So look at the map zoom in on the AT and follow it where you are going to hike. Once you drive to the trail start the app and hit record track.
As for a charger, check out "Goal Zero". It charges solar, battery, or direct to wall or puter.

1+ on goal zero I recharge all my batteries from it (aa and aaa). Also the panel has a USB charger there so I can charge what ever. But the small battery packs seem great recharge when u hit town. Never thaught of that

Solar. I bid on one on EBAY and it only cost me twelve bucks. it is the size of an IPhone. Looking at the specs, without a picture to share or link to share, 99.80 grams; just under a pound. It is a solar charger and flashlight. Slim and works great under low light. Charges thru usb or wall outlet; comes with every attachment necessary. It is simply called "Solar Charger & Flashlight." does auto conversions, solar auto charge, usb charge, ac adapter charge. Made in china of course :( .

I use the new trent 12000mAh charger on my ten day section hike. It worked like a charm. I keep my Iphone and ipad plus let another hiker charge their phone. Well worth weight and price.

I haven't tried it (I am fine with my cell phones battery life) so I maybe talking out school....

But wouldn't the cheapest and lightest option to buy a spare battery (or two) when one battery wears out swap batteries. When you get to town, charge one battery, swap it and then charge the other.

A spare battery would weigh less than any of those external gizmos.

Spare set of LI batteries weighs 45g. I only use my phone for music, photos, and occasional PDF reader (store excel sheets and other trip information there). Most of the time I only need to charge once per trip. Unit produces 2-3 full charges depending on the age of your phone. I have yet to need the spare set on trips less than a week long. I bought mine at Home Depot, ordered the adapter from Amazon. No Iphone 5 style version available yet. Power sources are hit or miss, and unless staying someplace long enough you don't have time to charge multiple devices IMO. Obviously not waterproof, but certainly more trail ready than other solutions out there. Easy to "bump" charge too- plug it in for 15 minutes at night to bump up your phone if needed and you don't need to take it out on trail and risk exposing it to weather.

EDIT- They don't call it the Long Green Tunnel for no reason- I've yet to hear of a person satisfied with solar on the AT. Murphy's Law- when your phone is dead, it will be raining.

If it is the same size and I am not sure which of the one hundred panels you are talking about thatare out there... Iphone needs some serious juice and most likely all day to charge from such a small panel... have you drained your battery and attempted to do a full charge? if so... how many hours of full sun did you need?... Honest I have been all over this for a few years.

I just got done reviewing two products. Goal Zero Nomad 7 Solar Panel and Thunderbolt Magnum 5 Watt Solar Panel. The goal zero is 7 watts and the Thunderbolt is 5 watts. They both will keep your phone fully charged if the phone starts off with a full charge. The Goal Zero costs $80.00 while the Thunderbolt costs $40.00. The Goal Zero is better quality by far. But if you want to stay cheap then get the Thunderbolt. Either way they will keep your phone fully charged so you can listen to music, make calls, take pictures, etc.

Newtrent for me too. I have the older 5000mah model and it's good for almost 3 full charges. With proper phone power management and airplane mode as the rule I've gotten 10 days of phone use. That includes using guthooks guide a few times a day which has geo-locate function and checking email occasionally.

I also occasionally read a book on the phone at night for an hour or so but keep the screen brightness way down to save power. The 5000mah are more than enough and IIRC it weighs about 6 oz or maybe a bit more.
