I have completed the AT from Springer to Northern Va and have mostly used a 20 degree bag. I am thinking of going lighter with a down 30 degree bag.

My hikes are in the spring and September/Oct time frame. However, I have had many moments where the 20 degree bag has done the job.

What do ya think??????????????????? Just not sure as I get further north.

You could always go to a down 30 with a silk liner just incase

+1 on the silk liner, I toughed out a 35° night or two in a 45 down bag and the liner was highly effective.
Up north, in those time frames, I'd stay with the 20° -especially at elevation.

I hike in October and April and I use a 40 degree bag. I sometimes sleep in my down jacket. A 30 will be fine.

If you're looking for a 30 degree, check out the ZPacks 30 degree bag, especially if you're willing to couple it with a silk liner. Reasonably priced and quality product from what I gather.

I've sectioned hiked from Springer to Fontana with each being the week of Thanksgiving. The first year(Deep Gap to Springer) I had a 20 degree synthetic bag which was plenty. Last year(Deep Gap to Fontana) I brought a 32 degree down bag which was plenty. But both years were wet with rain and mist and the down bag really soaked up moisture.
