Split peas soaked in water for 4 or so hours, pre-add seasoning.

Ramen is also good after a few hours, gets warm in the pak/food bag..............good to go.

backpackingchef.com has some good dehydrated at home meals. Seems pretty healthy and not a lot of preservatives or other add-ins you'd find in prepackaged food.

I love the HungryHammockHanger's recipes, especially the BarBQued Spaghetti and trail beef stew. Beats any store bought dehydrated meal.

Check him out on You Tube.

Don't forget to use the name brand FREEZER thickness bags for better safety. I've used the $$ Store type/Wally type and have not had very good results. I usually use the quart size as well.

Peas are a tough legume; even after a 24 hour soak, it will take at least 45 minutes for them to soften and take the flavor of whatever type of soup or side you'll need.

In our local grocer, we have these great dry soup mixes that reconstitute in ten minutes or so. I'll throw it in the freezer bag with choice of protein, some freeze dried veggies, and hot sauce--served with a nice crusty bread that'll last a few days in the pack.

Dried tortellini (buy in grocery store in pasta aisle) dehydrated tomatoes and peppers - even kale! Some garlic salt, then add a little olive oil to the cooking water and voila! Tortellini soup. Very lightweight and surprisingly filling. And I love this recipe because I don't have to drain anything.

The best way I've found so far is to grind the peas in a grain grinder (I think a blender, food processor, or coffee mill would work just fine). What you get is called pea flour, an old, old way of making instant food. I tried it a few months back, and the results were pretty interesting. Three tablespoons of flour added to a cup of water with a little chicken bouillon. brought to a boil made real pea soup. I haven't tried it yet, but a little can of ham and some dried onions and a few turns of pepper would make a meal.

Easy cozy for freezer baggin:

A few years ago I did an experiment during the winter months. I put a package of Ramen noodles in a ziploc, added 2 cups of boiling water and then put that into a brown paper lunch bag. I then put it ouside on the deck for 10 min. Outside temps were below freezing. After 10 min. I brought it back in the house, opened it up and the noodles were well rehydrated and the water temperature was at 180 degrees. For me, that temperature is way too hot to start eating without having to blow on it to cool it down. I created a thread in this forum at the time to share the results. Just a small air space between the ziploc and the paper bag wall was enough to protect it while rehydrating. Recycle your next used tyvek mailer into a cozy.

One of our favorites is Lipton Teriyaki rice with a Teriyaki salmon stake in foil pack. The lipton rice you put in a pot bring to a boil and let simmer for 7 min. Or what we do is put in pot bring to a boil and let sit in pot for 5 min. works the same. Add a little under the recommended amount of water to have little left juice to deal with. While hot crumble up the salmon stake and add to rice. 1 pack of each will feed to people (hungry backpackers) easily. Very Very tasty and not a lot of weight. Total cost for meal about $4, Serves 2, Flavor - awesome. To make a full meal we add lemon cookies for desert and apple cider on cold nights.

The boxed Zatararan brand meals are real good. I bring the water to a boil, pour it in t he zip bag where the Zatarans is and put it all in a cozy. Add a little jerky or side of spam or etc. real good. Especially the Jambalya meal.

I do instant mashed potatoes. I go ahead and add the salt & pepper and I use Butter Buds for some buttery flavor. I also carry packets of butter from KFC to help w/ making it creamier. I cook a Span single along with string cheese and voila! dinner.

I just recieved a free sample of efoods. They have a grand variety. if you buy enough they cost about a buck an entree. They taste pretty good. They are freeze dried. Instructions say bring water to boil and simmer for 20minutes. I just let it sit for 20 min of the stove and it did fine. Anyone else have experiance with Efoods

Dehydrate some thawed/drained blackeyed peas, spiced with garlic, seasoned pepper, oregano, and roasted red pepper cubed small.

On the trail, rehydrate in same pot while almost any flavor ramen is cooking. Delicious and lightweight too!

I prefer to dehydrate FROZEN peas that have been thawed, but I suppose canned would be OK too.

P.S.: On the last night before a town break during my last section in Maine, I found I had too much of this dehydrated and offered some to others camped nearby. While a couple said no thanks, I'm proud to report that I made converts of four "yankees" who had never tasted blackeyed peas before!

I have been using it daily for the last 3 1/2 years. I put it into chocolate protein powder for a a peanutbutter cup drink. I had gastrict bypass and need all the protein that I can get. Love the stuff.

oh, heck - there are a lot of them but how about this:

Bisquick - add water (just a little - keep it real dry)
Roll with fuel bottle or water bottle and a little more Bisquick
opt. add grated or cubed cheese from block of cheese
cut into biscuits with your cup
fry in pan with a little oil or bake in fire
enjoy (plain or with honey, pancake syrup, jelly, etc.)

Sounds great. Also - do NOT confuse the squeeze bottle of honey with the squeeze bottle of Dr Bronner's!

But I'm a tiny bit surprised to hear a 2000-miler recommend 'fry in pan' - I thought a frying pan was something that only clueless weekenders brought, and even I have trouble justifying the weight. Is there a lighter approach to frying that I'm missing?

Please tell me there is, because I'm remembering one trip that I took a trout using a fly improvised with a safety pin and a couple of feathers leaked from a sleeping bag, tied with dental floss. And then, for want of a skillet, I had to steam it on top of rice and veggies in my cookpot, which wasn't bad, but nothing like what it might have been.

It's less important for the biscuits. They also work wrapped around a peeled stick, if you have a campfire. Birch, maple and spruce are best. Or bring a foil muffin cup, add a handful of soaked dried fruit (or fresh berries if you've found some!) and steam it for ten minutes over a half-inch of water in your cookpot.

Absolutely, my favorite is the Creamy Potato. Well-spiced, easy to prepare, and in the woods add extras like dehydrated veggies or chicken from a small can or pouch to make it even better. At home, I'll buy a fully cooked rotisserie turkey breast at the supermarket, and cut up part of that to add to the Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup. Perfect!

However, when camping, one package is too much for my relatively small trail pot so I need to divide the contents into two parts for two meals and then vacuum seal each. It would be just the right size, I think, for a couple hiking together and using a larger pot.

Lentil and Dried Vegetable and Herbs and Spices...

2 Scoops of Lentils
1 Scoop of Dried Vegetable Mix
1 Scoop of Dried Herb Mix mostly bland stuff like Parsely so you can get more vitamins and minerals.
Some spices, maybe some salt.
Boil water and make a hot cup of tea, then add rest of boiling water to your soup mix, then keep simmering with a small vegetable oil and jute wick lamp/burner. Test as you sip your tea but lentils should be edible 20-30 minutes and vegetables sooner. No hurry at night.

Or cook and dehydrate the lentils in advance. Then they're ready in 10 minutes and you can simmer them in a cozy.
