I just read in The Register that the ATC has rec'd over $40,000 from the sale of the NC AT tags. A big thanks to Clark Wright for his efforts.

I've had mine a little over a year now and you'd be amazed at the number of conversations having it on the car has started. It's a good way to make people aware of the AT and in turn, support it financially. Plus, it looks really cool! :D

It takes quite a bit of work. Clark was looking for a way to help support the trail in NC on the at-l and actually followed through on my suggestion. He enlisted the help State Senator Sam Queen who has "0001 AT", proposed it to the state legislature and 300 individuals needed to pre-apply for the plate before they'd make them. The ATC was notified along with local trail clubs among others. Now there's well over 2000 and $20 from each plate ($58 total) goes mostly to trail maintenance in the state each year.
Although other states usually have similar plates, guidelines are different.
I've had mine for a year now and have to renew. Didn't get numbers though.
:) May even attach it to my pack when I thru next year. Just kidding you ultralighters.

Supposedly, plans are in the works to get the plates going in Tennessee and Georgia.

Hey I didn't know if you got the tag the ATC gives you a membership. The last couple years I kept on forgetting to re-up with the ATC but I've have kept the tag. So I guess I've been a member all along. Wonder why I have received the new mag?

When I got my AT tag last year, I was never told anything about an ATC membership and never received the magazine or anything else. Was I supposed to fill out a form or something?

Although it doesn't necessarily say so on the link, I guess we were supposed to go through the ATC. You could always call Leanne Joyner at the ATC office in Asheville at 828 254-3708
