One of the preparedness exercises I do every year is to spend a night using only the contents of my personal survival kit. It fits in my pocket in an Altoids tin. What I can tell you is that while you survive, the experience is always an ordeal and is not enjoyable. These kinds of kits are designed to get you by in a pinch, keep you alive, and make you a little more comfortable than you'd otherwise be, but I can't imagine ever choosing to use a survival kit for anything but survival training or a survival situation.

With a couple of exception you should be carrying all this stuff as your normal hiking gear. Forget about anything connected with foraging for food. Ain't gonna happen.

I dunno what they have lined in lead but that weighs a lot for what it is. skip the snare, fishing gear, saw, mirror and candle. most of that folks have anyway and it should weigh quite a bit less

I carry a Silva compass that has a mirror (46 grams) when hiking solo. There's a 1/3 of your body that you can't see without a mirror in case you get injured. Plus I wear contacts. And I have a bad sense of direction...

I have brought (and used) a ring saw on winter treks. It gives you something to do to keep warm ;)

++ Snare wire – if you somewhat trained and even undestand how to use this – you still won't catch much.... time and again this doesn't work out because there is no real practice in the field.
“” What is wrong with a UL White Micro Bic 1000's of lights
## Only works on reasonable sunny days and its heavy I still like it.
!! Most likley the wrong whistle. Black Storm is the right one, Honest its too heavy and the whole thing would be stripped down
