The sun was out this morning and the summits were clear with just some high clouds coming in from the west

Tonight Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 7pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 35. Strong and damaging winds, with a south wind 55 to 60 mph decreasing to 50 to 55 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 85 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Wednesday Showers likely, mainly before noon. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 37. Very windy, with a northwest wind 34 to 41 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Anyone heading up on the ridges today hopefully have a place to hunker down tonight like Lake of the Crowds or had enough sense to high tail it down. I do not care what gear someone has, in these sort of conditions someone without solid shelter is going to have a bad and potentially dangerous night.

This usually happens right around this time of year, if we are lucky in a couple of weeks, we will go back to warm weather.

And we know not to count on it lasting for long! Remarkable how narrow the window is up there, especially in the Presidentials.

Having camped up there (it was legal, then) I heartily endorse your warning.

Lakes and Madison both closed for the season 9/15. Don't even think about camping near them in bad weather as they are both completely exposed above tree line. Plan instead on dropping below tree line in sudden, bad weather or you may not live to regret it.
