So five of my brothers and I are going to do a five day hike starting from my parents place by Devils Gap (they have a farm right there) and hike north. We are all middle age, not in the best shape, but have been prepping for the hike for the last few months.

Our main goal is to have fun as brothers again, get some hiking done and hopefully see some of the colors we all miss from home. We all grew up in Asheville.

Here is the itinerary:

Our Dad is going to meet us at Curly Maple Gap Shelter and we will dump our packs in the truck and free hike the last day. He will then pick us up at the end of the hike. Can't remember the name of the highway just north of 395.

Suggestions? Comments? Anyone familiar with this section? I know Sugar Loaf can be steep.

thanks,
dave

Have some warm clothes and sleeping bags. It'll be way colder than Texas!

With a group of 6 you might want to get up early and hike so that you arrive at the shelter early. Otherwise it might be full.

That brings up a question that we had. Do you have to sleep at a shelter or can you pitch a tent elsewhere? I'm a hammock guy, but my brothers would prefer not staying at the shelters if possible. That is something I still need to look into.

Pitch or hang where you want to.
