I haven't hiked the Colorado Trail, in fact only hiked once in Colorado once. Noticed a couple of posts mentioned sheepdogs on the trail. What's the story?

Not sure of what you've read, but I suspect the dogs are looking after the many flocks of sheep grazing on USFS land.

Makes sense. I didn't know there were numerous flocks on forest land. It does seem it was mentioned where someone was hiking with their dog.

Around Kokomo Pass and Stony Pass you'll see flocks of sheep (at least this past and previous seasons). They are usually two types of dogs: A blue heeler or similar for herding and a Great Pyrenees (big white dog!) for guarding.

The Great Pyrenees can be intimidating but will not a harm the hiker unless he or she is overly aggressive towards the flock.

I came upon a dead dog some miles south of Spring Creek Pass, right under the Antenna Peak drainage headwall. I camped there early that evening due to a serious hailstorm. I always thought it was a dead sheep till starting processing the picture at home. Could it be a herding dog? A Great Pyrenees? A pack of coyotes were howling late that evening, I feared the dead animal, which was 150 Ft. away, could attract the pack.

We ran into several dogs in the Winds, in Wyoming. They left the flock to check us out, but only one acted aggressive. Part of the herd almost ran us over, but that wasn't the dog's fault. Those sheep were being herded by people on horseback.
