Hi,

I am looking for any suggestions for an easy/moderate trail with an overnight stay in or near Eastern PA or NJ. I was thinking something out and back 8 miles or so each way but would love to hear any suggestions.

Thanks!

The Pinchot Trail or Thunder Swamp Trail are fairly easy backpacking loops in eastern PA. The Old Loggers Path in eastern northcentral PA is fairly easy with short climbs and is immediately threatened by gas fracking (state doesn't control the mineral rights) so see it this year. See http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/recreation/hiking/stateforesttrails/index.htm for links to these.

Circuit hikes around the A.T. in Michaux State Forest are fairly easy, not quite as rocky nor as restricted by regulations as A.T. areas further north. See some of the links here for examples: http://www.midatlantichikes.com/pa.htm

Pinchot Trail is one of the easiest. It is sort of a figure 8, so you can do one loop on one day and the other loop the next, but if there is a problem, it's easy to get back to your car.
