View Full Version : What type of Underwear for long distance hikes?

Well this year I went on a nice dayhike on the AT. It was a 14 mile day and I did it averaging 2.5 miles an hour even with uphills and rock scrambles. I was proud of myself and thought I found my perfect setup with all the gear I used.
Then the next morning I had a little pain and burning during urination.
I went to the doctor and it seems some irritation on the tip of my "you know what" and it was probably due to the hike and the underwear I was using. It seems that the high priced underarmor Heatgear touch boxerbriefs I was using has a seam down the center of the crotch area and while it may not be noticable during regular wear, it rubbed that area raw during a 14 mile hike.
So my question is this, what underwear do hikers use? Of course I'm looking for something comfortable and synthetic.
Bro i quit wearing underwear in 96 and i have had no chaffing or any other problems since. RED-DOG ( Flip-Flop 96 & GA-ME 06 & GA-ME 2012 ).

In warmer weather, I use shorts with the sewn-in liner. Cool and comfortable. :)

None while hiking, sometimes while sleeping.
go without. solves the chaffing issue, keeps your nether region cooler, saves weight, dont need to deal with laundry, and no need to color coordinate with your outfit.

The ONLY underwear I will ever put on myself are Exofficio boxer briefs...they are insanely comfortable, done ride, last forever and try crazy super quick!

A little off topic but... made me recall a tick I pulled off last year.
Merino wool boxer briefs....

+1, that's all I use.

Under Armour compression shorts, never have any problem with thighs or your particular problem. No problems this weekend, even on a 21+ mile day (Yellow Creek Gap to Wesser/NOC). They do not work for everyone though, and can cause chafing on other locations, especially when it is warm out...

Merino wool boxer briefs fall-winter-spring. Commando in the summer, but I wear the wool briefs at night to absorb moisture, otherwise I get chapped.

I like Patagonia silkweight boxer briefs. Wear one; wash one. Very light.

+1 for these and Underarmor boxer briefs, both have worked well for me.

+1 on Exofficio for any physical activity but I prefer their sport briefs
I like to wear nylon convertible pants with a built in underwear/liner. Thus, no need for underwear. I mentioned this in some past thread about underwear and a couple people chimed in that they found the built in liner uncomfortable to hike in after a while, especially if it was hot, but I haven't had that problem. I tried the Exofficio boxer briefs, found them comfortable, but they got funky fast. I looked for something in merino and found Icebreaker Men's Briefs on sale at Amazon. My new favorites.

I have been using the Ex-Officio for a while now but recently switched to Merino wool and am very happy with them. The Ex-O do get a little funky after a while but the Merino seem to do much better and I find them more comfortable. Tried the Icebreaker but didnt like the fit that much. Went with the I/O Merino and they work great.

Despite the hefty $25 price tag, I agree that ExOffico boxer briefs are worth every penny, in terms of comfort, odor resistance, quick drying, and durability.
Starter (Walmart) and Champion (Target) both have boxer briefs at about half the price of UnderArmour.

Same here! I wore some underarmor boxer briefs and after the second day my ass was itching so bad I didnt want to sit. As soon as I changed the itch went away. The starter shorts never give me a problem.

When I did some 2 week hikes I used silk boxers. No irritations or chafing or any other complaints. When I did these there wasn't any Under Armour and you didn't hear much about merino wool. Right now I'm using some MTP underwear from Cabelas but I want to try some merino wool underwear and t-shirts.

+1 for Merino wool boxer briefs.
Merino wool.
My most recent hike bought a pair of Icebreaker merino wool running shorts on clearance............excellent. Amazingly no stink, wore them alone or under my kilt.......great new gear.

I wear the same pants. Perfect except the elastic/drawcord can irritate after a few days. I tuck in my shirt for a few hours.
