We are hiking the GA section of the AT starting this coming weekend (10/20/2012) and are being dropped off at USFS 42 & the AT just north of Springer. Does anyone know the condition of USFS 42? We are being dropped of in a non-4 wheel drive vehicle and am wondering if we will have any problems.

Thanks

Road is in good shape. Regular passenger car will be just fine. Years ago I used to drive my MG Midget all over that road with no issues.

We approached from the north (trail west) and left from the south (trail east) about 1.5 weeks ago. The south approach had a few soggy places, but our minivan did fine. The road from the north is better, but both are passable.

I got dropped off there two weeks ago last Friday, but that was before the big rain. Perhaps if you called one of the shuttle drivers listed on the ATC web site, they may have the most up to date information.

USFS is in good shape but why don't you hike up from Amicola Falls State Park or is the approach trail too HARD for you.

My mountain home is on FS 42 up at the Suches end. I was down at Springer last week and the road is in the best condition I can remember. I could have made it easily in my wife's crossfire which has about 6" clearance.

You can expect a lot of vehicles on FS 42 this weekend because of the start of the season. Be careful on the curves because you will not see the oncoming vehicles until it may be too late.

I was just up there this past weekend, the road is in great shape, a little bumpy in spots and dusty but that's it. Enjoy the high
