They were five days overdue when they were found, alive and apparently well. Given the rough weather we've had lately, this is great news. I'll be interested to learn where they went astray. Oldman Lake is only about eight miles from Two Medicine Campground, and I think they were just out for an overnighter.

Was it nasty enough out that they would have elected to hunker down rather than hike out? I don't recall the trail from Oldman to Two Med as being difficult.

It's not a difficult hike. My husband and I hiked it as a day hike in late September. We saw a bald eagle at Oldman Lake.

This past weekend there was snow and wind, but that can't be the whole story. A lot of that section is not forested. Maybe they lost the trail under the snow and went astray. The news report mentions the searchers found a fire circle, which implies they were on the move rather than just sitting tight the whole time.

The searchers were pretty optimistic in spite of the bad weather because both hikers were experienced and in good condition, and were carrying backpacking gear.

The news report said the Park Service will release more information tomorrow.
