Anyone use rain pants? I am hiking springer to NC starting this coming weekend. I planned on also using them for warmth if need be, but did not want to carry just for that. Are they just added weight or have you found them to be useful/needed?

Thanks

I'll carry them in colder weather, to use for cold wet windy conditions (i.e., for their intended purpose) and also as part of my layering system. Often they are the only pants I bring, as I prefer to hike in shorts. So they are useful even if it's not raining.

I use a pair of sil-nylon chaps, I think they weigh 3oz? They pack EXTREMELY small. I have never used them but I guess they're worth the weight when I do need them one day.

I carry a rain wrap. 2 oz, very compact. Works well in windy conditions as well as providing much better ventilation. Wear some longjohns underneath if it's cold. Been happy with these in rain, wind, sleet, snow so far. Was concerned with stepping over trees, rocks etc. but hasn't been much of a problem at all.

You can pick up a set of Tyvek pants for less than $10 and about 2 oz. Not extremely durable

I'll use them as insulating layer/camp pants. Also handy on laundry day when I wash my hiking shorts.

They are roughly $3 a pair. As you said, they should be treated like they're disposable, even if you can use them a few times. Ordering a few at a time is a good idea so that shipping isn't such a big fraction of the overall bill.

I also like tyvek sleeves and booties.

I believe it's a good idea this time of year with hypothermia an issue in precipitation.

i highly recommed them. used mine in camp, rarely hiked in them. be sure to add extra velcro around try he waist for use when you lose weight. had that done at trail days in damacus.

"What is a rain wrap?"

It's a silnylon kilt-like thing with velcro tabs. Mine came from ULA. Very good in cold windy weather even without precip.

What is a rain wrap?

It's a skirt, like your teacher wore in third grade.

ohhhh, OK. A skirt! Well, as long as the guys keep their knickers on underneath, it's all good. :D
