Too bad it wasn't last night - took a walk around midnight and the stars were blazing and I even saw one shooting star :) But now it's gonna rain all weekend here.

what you saw was part of the shower .
personally, i never seem to be able to view during peak times, either too cloudy or as i find out later on the news"it was a bit disappointing".come home with an aching neck looking for meteors that never showed up. the experience of seeing an unexpected shooting star has always been more memorable.

I'm hanging the hammocks in the back yard, having the grandkids sleep over and will be getting them up in the wee early morning hours to watch the show...used to do the same thing with my kids, now it is time for the next generation!!

Heading to the high country in Virginia for an overnight trip. The weather looks good - we'll look for these. Thanks!

Should be a good show starting around 11pm. I'm taking my grandson camping in the SNP to see it. I'm hoping to get him addicted to the outdoors.

If I were an invading alien, this is the weekend I would choose. Earthlings would think my ship is just another shooting star.

Something to think about.

And why isn't there an alien smiley?

I stepped outside half an hour ago. The bad news is that it's too cloudy to see so much as a single star. The good news is that it's snowing!!!

I went out at 0300 with my warm bag and acup of coffee. Beautiful clear nite, maybe 2 dozen flashes. Very pleasant............................I have to get out!

It was cloudy when we went to sleep near Mt Rogers, but totally clear when I got up to answer the call around 1 a.m. Great view of the sky, and Orion rising in the east. Stood there for about 10 minutes and saw nothing. Got cold and went back to bed.

The history of Orion meteor showers indicates some years are much better than others. There is no ryhme or reason to it.

Clear sky as the sun set, but clouds slowly rolled in. Raining by midnight. No show for me this year. Maybe the Leonids in November will be visible.

I camped out around the DWG in NJ hoping for an amazing show... and it just didn't happen :/ I stayed up until about 2am but didn't see much. I guess I spent the more time looking down and tending to my fire then I did looking at the stars. It was cold so the fire was definitely more important. I did see about 6 though, not TOO bad I guess.

the show was the best around 5:30am here...woke the 5 year old grandson up, took the tarp off the hammocks and we did the "ooooo, ahhhh" for about 1/2 hour till he crashed again...very nice!!!

As I stated before I'm in the wrong hemisphere but hopefully HB will remind me to watch for the Leonids next August....

I think the show is still going, it just "peaked" Saturday night. Just look in the area of the constellation Orion in a low light pollution area.

The Leonids this year should peak the night of Nov. 16/17, a night when the moon will set early, so it should be nice and dark.

Thanks!
I meant the Perseids but got the name confused due to Leo/August etc.
That's my excuse anyway.

This shower can be visible into early November with approx. 5 per hour depending on lighting conditions and location.

And I agree, thank you to the OP for posting!

Stayed up until 1am and never saw anything from the SNP. Got up about 4am for a pee break and saw a ton of stars but no meteors. But we still had fun hiking and camping and that's all that matters.
