no affiliation, etc.

This looks like a better deal than the old lands end down sweaters or the kirkland ones or the JC Penny ones. Uniqlo just opened their online presence, they're primarily a fashion retailer out of japan. I don't care who they are, a deal on a down sweater is a deal on a down sweater. I think there's only a few physical stores, maybe in NYC, so if you're afraid of buying sight unseen, this might not be for you.

looks like they have base layers and merino for fairly cheap as well. http://www.uniqlo.com/us/store/made-for-all/item/069108
shipping seems to be 7 dollars, I'm not sure if that's per order or per item.

Since "down" can be 10% or so feathers, and this is 90% "down", I would assume that the filling is 20% feathers MOL. Could be a good deal regardless.

If this is the same jacket as last year, it's very light, and surprisingly good for the price. A few people on the soon to be defunct BPL site had good things to say about it.

This is good news. Last I checked, they did have a store in NYC, and I think a couple more stores in the region, but nothing remotely close to me. At least now I have an option.

Now the tough part is deciding between this jacket that has decent reviews but little detailed specifications, or the $70 Kirtland jacket at Costco that has has specs and good reviews too.

I did not see any merino wool, but they do have synthetic clothing marketed as Heattech.

I see the differentiator as the choice of colors. I don't think the 50$ price will last forever.

They also have a hooded parka and a vest.

What do you think a down jacket upper weight ought to be? (this is for use on CDT). I have an LL Bean one that is old but still is great I was going to use. Only problem it wighs 32.30 oz.

I just got one of these Uniqlo Down Hoody's and it weighs 10.12 Oz. per my scale. It's 640FP (90 Down/10 Feathers), comes with a stuff sack to compress the jacket. Quality looks good and based on my opinion, it's better than the Kirkland/Costco ones - the Uniqlo has more loft.

Key things to note about the jacket, it doesn't have any zipper storm flaps inside, it also doesn't have an option to cinch the bottom portion of the jacket as well as the hood. It is however, DWR treated.

Last year I went to the store in NYC to try it on and decided to go with a different jacket, mostly because I couldn't get a straight answer from their customer service people (in store or online) about the fill power of the down. That being said, it did loft well, I would guess it is in the 500-600 fill-power range based on feel.
