GPS Software

As I was downloading GPS information from my GPS to my computer, I had a question. What software do you use to store your GPS tracks? I use BaseCamp (http://www.garmin.com/us/products/onthetrail/basecamp) (from Garmin) because it's free and it talks to my GPS.

But I didn't do a lot of searching or investigation.

So, what software do you use and why?

ExpertGPS - have done extensive Geocaching - it's good stuff.

Basecamp works great, at least for what I do.

I use this site to convert different formats (KML, KMZ, etc) to GPX tracks that'll import into Basecamp: http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do

My GPS has a USB cable, so I just drag and drop files from my GPS to my computer. Once on the computer, I use www.gpsvisualizer.com to draw maps. Sometimes Garmin connect to get the elevation changes.

Hmm, I'm way out of the box here. Quantum GIS, Mapnik, and GRASS mostly, although I have other bits and pieces lying around for specialized jobs. Tracks eventually wind up in tables in a PostGIS database. Oh yeah, and JOSM if I'm cleaning up stuff for Open Street Map.

What can I say, I'm a map weenie.

Well, I’ll be interested in it for geocaching requirements. I have often used USA Photomap’s topographical function to plan for my path into a cache site by preventing needless hills, marsh & water.
