Don't know if there are any more NOBO Thru hikers on the trial, but it looks like a weird hybrid "Snowicane" may be coming to the North East US next week. Just a heads up. Be Careful.

Consider it a gift from those of us in Florida tired of hearing about fall hiking and snow camping while it's still Hurricane Season here.
Stock up folks, you can always use the stuff later for hiking.

i just read about this storm....it sounds pretty scary...like even the meterologists are freaked out by it and the possible strength and devastation it could cause....if there are hikers in the HMW unaware of this storm....will there be efforts made to alert these people since they don't have access to weather alerts?? i don't like freak storms...or mean bears...or alligators...or spiders...or Jak.....nevermind...

Don't forget sharks, especially falling-out-of-the-sky-sharks! http://www.livescience.com/24256-shark-falls-from-sky-onto-golf-course.html

"At the San Juan Hills Golf Club in southern California, course hazards include sand traps and falling sharks.

Or they did on Monday (Oct. 22) afternoon, when a 2-foot-long, live leopard shark apparently plummeted from the sky and landed very close to the 12th tee box at the San Juan Capistrano, Calif., course.

The writhing fish out of water was discovered by an on-duty course marshal, who acted fast to save the shark, according to the Capistrano Dispatch (http://thecapistranodispatch.com/view/full_story/20585074/article-Fish-Out-of-the-Water--Live-Shark-Found-at-San-Juan-Hills-Golf-Course?instance=eye_on_sjc)

He loaded it onto his golf cart and drove it back to the clubhouse, where other employees joined the cause to save the wayward animal. After briefly placing the shark in a bucket of homemade salt water, cart attendant Bryan Stizer used his break to drive the shark to the Pacific Ocean, about 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) away.

"I thought he was dead," Stizer told the Dispatch. "When I dropped him into the water, he just lied there for a few seconds, but then he did a twist and shot off into the water."

The shark, which reportedly had two bleeding wounds near its dorsal fin (http://www.livescience.com/18636-shark-fin-soup-neurotoxin.html), is thought to have been dropped over the golf course by a predatory bird, though no one is known to have actually seen the shark fall.

Julianne Steers, chief aquarist at the Ocean Institute near the golf course, told the Dispatch that there are ospreys and peregrine falcons in the area that could have snatched the shark from shallow waters before losing hold of it.

Fish falling from the sky (http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/75-can-it-really-rain-fish.html) is not an unheard-of phenomenon. The downpours of fish and frogs reported throughout history and around the world have been attributed to strong winds that pick up aquatic animals and deposit them many miles inland."

On Thursday, Sandy is a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds and is moving north at 18mph, said Fox Connecticut MeteorologistJoe Furey (http://www.courant.com/topic/weather/joe-furey-PECLB00000061002.topic).
Sandy will head into central and then the northern Bahamas. Then it will continue into the open waters of the Atlantic, east of North Carolina by early Saturday, Furey said.

The National Hurricane Center (http://www.courant.com/topic/disasters-accidents/meteorological-disasters/hurricanes/national-hurricane-center-ORGOV0000100.topic)'s newest path for Sandy, brings the hurricane to the Central New Jersey coast by early Tuesday, Furey said.
"This will have a significance effect on the entire east coast," he said.

The storm will have a significant impact in Connecticut on Monday and early Tuesday, he said.

in this particular case, I don't think it's so much about just the hurricane. having lived in Florida most of my life, we are smart about them but don't get too wound up about it either. the issue here is all of the RARE converging weather systems that will come together around New England to potentially wreak major havoc. coming from someone who is very used to riding these things out, if I was the loved one of someone hiking in that area right now I would be very concerned.

You would have to walk with headphones on and ignore every other hiker you passed or passed you, (even I can't ignore humans that much) to not know this thing might be coming with this much advance notice.

Anyone on the trail by the time it gets to the Northeast is there because they want to be.

Hope they enjoy it safely.

We're already getting the rain bands on the Space Coast. It's been raining since 4 this morning. If you look at NOAA sat. it's a big system. If it hits a cold front up north it could get nasty real quick. Hikers need to watch out.

What was the last hurricane to hit Orlando? Donna? Maybe Wilma?

In 04, we had three hit Otown. Charlie came across downtown as a cat 1 and was very tightly formed. Jean was a large system that hung over us for several days and dumped incredible rains which downed tons of trees because of the added water weight, and I do think Wilma was the third. Also a very large system.

The latest has Sandy sitting over Pennsylvania and New York for a day. This is a huge storm and will dump massive amounts of rain during that time while it barely moves. Add in the full moon/high tides when it comes ashore, and the major problems are going to be flooding, downed trees and loss of electrical power. If it goes as predicted, there may be millions of people without power for days, even weeks.

The brunt of the storm is expected to miss RI, but we are still expecting high winds and torrential rains. In the interest of public safety, (to reduce the possibility of flying debris  ), a local congressional candidate has asked all his supporters to remove his campaign signs from their lawns and store them until the storm has passed by. Be interesting to see if other candidates follow suit on this advice. :-?

The page calls it a "Frankenstorm". One model predicts this map for next week. Think it might be a little windy on Mt. Washington?

Good thoughts coming your way, and everyone else who's going to get slammed. We're projected to get 3"-6" of rain and wind gusting to 60mph. Bad enough, but not nearly as bad as folks farther north.

I'm tired, but I think we're as ready as we can be.

Not sure if there are any stranded hikers near Harpers Ferry. If so, I can harbor 1-2 hikers till Sandy passes. I live in Martinsburg (about 20 miles away). I can come pick you up since I'm off a few days. Please understand that I live in a small 2 bedroom corporate apartment with the wife and 2 dogs. It is nothing fancy but not a roach motel. You can text me at 334-655-1111. Kevin.

That's really a nice offer, Kevin. I will put up my offer as well- any hikers in need of a place to stay in the Daleville VA area while the storm passes through, you can text me at 540-815-1289. I have plenty of extra space (finished basement room w/ bathroom)- I can come pick you up as well.

Seriously, hope this one just blows over with minimal impact and everyone in the affected areas stays safe. Lived in NC all my life, seem to get at least one hurricane a year, sometimes more :(, you have my good wishes and prayers.

Up here in Providence, RI, they are preparing to activate the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier (which I can see from my apartment window).

Then they will start pumping the river water past the barrier and into the harbor. This is to prevent the same type of catastrophic flooding that devasted Providence during the 1938 hurricane. The barrier has worked flawlessly every time they have used it. Got to hand it to those US Army Engineers who designed and built it! :clap

Here are shots of the barrier and the pump house, and what happened in 1938 when the city flooded:

I just returned last night from a week trying to do some building in Haiti. One of our teams was building a house on an exposed ridge, and had to hike out after 1/2 their tents collapsed as there was no road to the site. They reported that it was quite difficult staying on their feet in the gusts that they estimated at around 60-70mph. We were based on the coast around 300 miles away from the path of the storm. Our host estimated that we experienced 20-30 inches of rain in a 3 day period. Cosmic joke is that one of the last things we did before being washed off our mountain site was plumbing rain barrels. They are now full! Flying out yesterday, we leapfrogged the storm, and I'm having deja vu all over again as I prepare for the imminent storm stateside. Take this one seriously, especially if you are coastal or in an area prone to flooding. Good luck all.

We sent this cane north almost three days ago. Winds only got to about 50 mph gusts and two inches of rain.

Being serious, makes me realize how much weather is worse on the East Coast vs the West in general (high country can be bad..but that does no actually shut down a major metro area for days, or even weeks on end. :O).

Hurricanes, blizzards and flooding. Yowch...

The wild fires are bad here but are (somewhat) localized. Even the blizzards out here are not as bad as the ones back East IMO.

I worry about friends and family back East.

Hunker down, be safe and try to ride this out friends. I am checking the news out here in CO.....

It was 77 degrees today here in Cali. Our weather is so seriously boring.
I am not kidding and not poking fun.. it is seriously boring having sunshine and blue skies all the time.

What is it they say: "those who know the storm, tire of the calm." something like that.

When I was on the AT it seemed like it rained every other day and more often than not there was lightning.

Here in the peoples republic of Cali the only time we see a flash of lightning is when someone rams his pickup truck into a power pole on the way home from the bar.

Still, we do get earthquakes and sometimes they can be big ones.

I think y'all out there in the East have it way worse with the hurricanes and tornados all the time than we do with the occasional large quake every other decade.

Actually i really miss the rain. Used to actually think we had a lot of rain out here.. until i hiked the AT.

It was quite strange to return on the plane and realize how brown and dry the west really is.

Stay safe out there everybody.

PS. both my sisters and their families live near Doylestown PA and I will be thinking of them and all of you out there during all this.

I can't help being a "prepper" - what my wife refers to as "sports and rec" are the shelves in my basement with backpacking and climbing stuff. What is ALSO there are several military grade boxes with canned food, dehydrated food, about 10 gallons of camping fuel, batteries, headlamps and flashlights, my backpacking stoves, first aid kit, am/fm weather radio, a few bottles of booze, etc. I also have 3 @ 5-gallon carboys of water and about 15 gallons of gasoline in cans. I'm NOT a survivalist type (if the world comes to an end, the world comes to an end) but I am equipped to stay at home for a couple of months or travel a few hundred miles in the Subaru unsupported by others - - I think that's smart and I would guess that most backpackers are pretty much similarly equipped.

Shenandoah National Park and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park announced closures yesterday. Below is text from their Facebook pages:

Shenandoah National Park
In anticipation of Hurricane Sandy, the North (mile 0-31.5) and South (mile 65-105) Districts will be closed beginning Sunday night, 10-28-12.
The Central District (mile 31.5-65) will be closing Monday at noon. All facilities will be closed and visitors must leave the park during the closure.
Be safe everyone!
(This same notice is posted on the home page of ups.gov/shen).

Harpers Ferry NHP
Due to the inclement weather, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is closed until further notice. We will post updated information on the weather and re-opening of the park as we receive it. Stay safe everyone!

Although there are sections of the A.T. that may not yet officially have a closure notice, more closures will likely be announced today. Blowdowns, flying debris, or flooding of small creeks are expected to cause life-threatening hazards that could affect any part of the Trail in Hurricane Sandy's reach.

To be safe, any A.T. hikers still on the Trail should get off now and seek shelter if they haven't already.

If there is one good thing that comes out of this in Western Maine and Northern NH is this may finally knock down the remaining dead white birches left over from the ice storm of 1998. Walking through the woods these days in the elevation bands most impacted by the ice storm is currently very hazardous with numerous large birches ready to shed large branches with any disturbance. Sometimes just walking by them is enough for them to let loose. As the sustained winds are expected to be from the east this might finally get them on the ground.

For those closer to the storm good luck.

The brunt of the storm is expected to miss RI, but we are still expecting high winds and torrential rains. ...

They closed the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier and activated the pumps at 6:45 am. All schools, and many businesses are closed. All public transportation will be shut down by 12 noon. The winds are gusting up to 40 mph, and the rain is moving sideways! They expect the worst of the storm from 8 pm tonight through 10 pm Tuesday night.

We are about 300 miles from the center of the storm. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through in the hardest hit areas. :-?

They push it off the end of the runways into the ocean. Logan is right next to the harbor. In Providence, that is what they did with the snow after the Blizzard of '78. They dumped it right into the rivers, or down at the shipyard docks, right into the sea.

you may have seen the worsts far as storm surge goes as the storm should make landfall north of you, and its east of the strom where the winds and waves are combining with full moon tides, causing "historic flooding"along both the north and south shores of long island, south shore of CT and up the hudson into westchester.

Hi...

Here in the lower Catskill Mountains of NY, all schools in this and adjoining counties are closed. From this pee em through tomorrow (Tuesday) pee em rain fall from one to three inches is predicted, as of earlier this ayem.

It's starting to get blustery now. Winds from this pee em to tomorrow pee em are expected to be between 30 to 40, and sustained gusts from 50 to 70.

I put bottles of water in the freezer compartment to freeze and help keep it cold when the power goes out. Same for the fridge. I encourage others to do the same.

Also, if you will be in the storm's path, fill your bath tub with water (even if you're on city water). This can be used for flushing toilets, washing dishes, etc., and even for putting out a fire...!!

Such a rainfall will necessitate emergency evacuations of several local towns and/or individual residents, per personal experience. This would also follow through for residents living along many parts of the nearby Delaware River.

Good luck to all who will be in its path.

From Mt Washington

"Hurricane Sandy will move inland today around the Delmarva Peninsula, then slowly shift northeast over the remainder of the forecast period. As it moves in today and tonight, the pressure gradient will become very steep causing winds to ramp up to 60 mph at the base of the mountains and surrounding valleys, with summits likely seeing several gusts well over 100 mph; so, a very windy day from the top to the bottom of the mountains. A very moist flow around this system will keep summits in dense fog and bring drizzle followed by rain that will become heavy at times. There is even a chance for some instability with this system to generate a thunderstorm or two. Thunderstorms may bring hail, sudden bursts of rain, and strong, sudden downdrafts."

HURRICANE SANDY WARNING
Hurricane Sandy will have major impacts on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail particularly in the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England states. If you had planned to hike this week, postpone your plans. If you are hiking now, leave the Trail and seek shelter in a sound structure in town or at a hostel or (least preferred option) an A.T. shelter. Use extreme caution during and following the storm.

Impacts from flooding and tree damage from high winds are likely to be extensive. Small stream crossings will become extremely hazardous with rainfall exceeding 12-inches in some locations. Emergency response may be delayed or nonexistent due to heavily taxed resources and access issues. Cell and electronic communications may not be available for an extended period.

In some areas of the trail, users should be prepared for the potential of snow accumulation that could hinder foot travel and hasten the threat of hypothermia or frostbite.

Hikers should always remember their obligations to potential rescuers, and stay safe and out of trouble. This is your responsibility!

Several areas that the Appalachian Trail passes through have been closed or have issued alerts. Pay attention to local agency closures and weather alerts for more information. Known closures or alerts:

Power out all night here in Frederick MD but restored (at least in our neighborhood) around 6:10 am. Winds were roaring all night - very scary. At one point I actually feared that the windows would give way. Our house sits up on a hillside and really gets the wind far worse than down in town. Waiting on sunrise to see if there is any damage in the area.

per the Weather Channel:

"Up to ten inches of snowfall was measured as far south as Newfound Gap, Tenn. at an elevation of 5,000 feet."

Also per TWC, the greatest amount of snow thus far was 18" recorded in Davis, WV high in the Monongahala NF near Dolly Sods. I was up there hiking the Allegheny Trail barely a week ago. Davis elevation is over 3,000'.

The highest wind recorded in RI was at Westerly...86 mph...it broke the weather station!

Mainly a wind event in the Providence area, with a lot of rain (1-2 inches). The hurricane barrier performed flawlessly in keeping the storm surge from the city. They had the barrier closed during the high tide periods, and opened one of the 3 gates to equalize the water levels in the mid-day hours. Unfortunately, a lot of the lower lying areas along the coast were flooded along with a lot of property damage. Lots of power outages, but the crews are quickly restoring service to the affected areas.

Compared to NYC, we are pretty well off. Be interesting to see how they are going to get that broken crane off of that skyscraper! :-?

Rationing Gas http://news.yahoo.com/northeast-digs-snow-gas-rationing-expands-004951341.html

New York rations gasoline; storm victims still in the dark

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City began rationing gasoline on Friday for the first time since the energy shortages of the 1970s, seeking to ease a fuel crisis brought on by Superstorm Sandy.

The former hurricane hammered the U.S. East Coast on October 29, killing at least 120 people and causing an estimated $50 billion in damage or economic losses.

It also disrupted the fuel supply chain, creating hours-long waits for gasoline that led officials first in New Jersey and now New York City and Long Island to impose rationing. Cars with odd- and even-numbered license plates will be able to buy gas and diesel fuel on alternate days.

"This is worse than the oil crises of the 1970s," said Ralph Bombardiere, executive director of the New York State Association of Service Stations and Repair Shops. "Back then there was just a perceived shortage of supply in New York, when there was plenty of gasoline around. Now we're having real distribution problems."

The long lines at the pump have added to the frustration of commuters, who must choose between driving and enduring seemingly interminable waits for buses and trains with parts of the transportation network still damaged.

In addition, some 434,000 homes and businesses in the Northeast lacked power as of Friday afternoon, creating more misery for the thousands forced to flee their storm-damaged homes or for those who have hunkered down in the dark with freezing overnight temperatures.

Protesters took to the streets in the Long Island town of Oceanside on Friday, chanting, "Where is LIPA? Where is LIPA?" referring to the Long Island Power Authority, a state-owned utility.

A snowstorm blasted the region on Wednesday, knocking out power to some homes just as they were getting back on the grid after Sandy. Warmer and sunny weather was forecast for the weekend, providing some relief to disaster victims.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at first resisted gas rationing, saying fuel supplies should return to normal once New York Harbor reopened after the storm and tankers started sailing again.

But many gasoline terminals - which transfer fuel from tankers at sea to trucks on land - sustained damage from the storm that created a record surge of seawater and flooded low-lying areas.

Because of long lines at terminals, gasoline trucks were only able to make two trips on Friday, when normally they would make six, Bombardiere said. The odd-even rationing "should help cut down on panic buying," he said.

But despite the new measure, long lines at gas pumps in New York City and Long Island continued on Friday. Some 28 percent of gas stations in the New York metropolitan area did not have fuel available for sale on Thursday, down from 38 percent on Wednesday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said.

LIKE A FOREIGN COUNTRY?

Gas lines were considerably shorter in New Jersey, and Governor Chris Christie said he expected power to be restored to 100 percent of the state by Saturday night.

But Christie, who toured the New Jersey shore on Friday, said the rebuilding effort for vacation towns would be "long, expensive and hard," and said it would not be completed in time for next summer.

"This is our Katrina," he declared.

In the Rockaways, a hard-hit area of Long Island, New York, a group of military veterans known as Team Rubicon helped residents shovel sand away from their homes, remove rotted drywall from basements and haul large items to the sidewalk.

At the sidewalk, New York sanitation officials used huge tractors to scoop the debris into dump trucks and hauled it away.

Peter Meijer, a Team Rubicon member who just returned from a trip helping refugees in South Sudan, said the work was gratifying. "This is more satisfying than even my time in the military."

A week after Sandy, Doctors Without Borders established temporary emergency clinics in the hard-hit Rockaways - a barrier island in Queens facing the Atlantic Ocean - to tend to residents of high-rises who still lacked power and heat and were left isolated by the storm.

"A lot of us have said it feels a lot like being in the field in a foreign country," said Manhattan doctor Lucy Doyle, who has worked for the medical relief organization in Africa.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it was providing mobile homes to people displaced by the storm, a reminder of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast seven years ago. Some evacuees would be housed nearly 200 miles from home, FEMA said, because there was little available space closer to the city.

Manhattan stores and restaurants have yet to recover. Some are awaiting emergency loans, while others are trying to make it on their own.

"We don't have the product to sell," said Zach Mack, a co-owner of the ABC Beer Co, which flooded last week, knocking out electricity for days. "And we don't have the people to sell it to."

Today the folks being interviewed summed it up on Fox News.... Its taking too long to get the power to get back on Long Island. So part of the frustration is even if the power gets back on - electricians need to replace the fuse boxes that were under water. Still 134,000 without power two weeks after the storm.

A small part was they didn't have enough poles.

This is gonna be interesting.

I'm in Delaware county PA , just south of Philly and right across the river from NJ. I wanted to get a 5 Gallon gas can for my lawn mower and every store in my area are still sold out of gas cans. Crazy stuff.
