What is exactly meant by "coleman fuel by the ounce" within the Handbook? Is this a reference to canister fuel or some other type of fuel? I see this stated places where i have been told there is canister fuel but it is also stated at other locations where i have not seen an confirmation. I am only interested in finding places along the trail where canister fuel is available. I have a good list but needed some larification on this question. Thanks,

Coleman fuel is standard "white gas."

And "white gas" is not canister fuel.

some stores sell fuel by the oz, usually 10 cents or so. We had good luck with this. some also sell alcohol by the oz, better luck at the packy though.

Fuel by the ounce is someone who has a gallon can of either Coleman gas or alcohol and will top off your fuel bottle. You typically pay about 5 to 10 cents per ounce for the fuel that you take.
