No particular reason, it's just my pic that comes to mind first (might also be because it's from a recent hike).

Tough question...the reason I chose this photo...young, middle aged, young at heart, men, women, enjoying the best of God's creation...not a bad view either.

Ok, this is not from my AT thru-hike..or any long hike.

But it is from way back in 1996. It was from my first solo backpacking trip. I saw this amazing sunset somewhere along Franconia Ridge.

I knew that someway and somehow I'd be doing the AT from this moment on.

Dave, I've always thought this was one of your best pics. I can feel myself sitting there, at that time of the day. I'm sure this could be the only pic in this thread and we would all feel the same.

That bear photo is very cool just because of how huge he is, but this photo is the best IMO. Looks like something out of Lord of the Rings!

That is one big bear! I passed one about that size climbing south from Watauga Lake 3 years ago. I was focused on the early morning climb and heard/"felt" something behind me. "He" was maybe 30 yards away eating berries. It made me wonder how many large animals I've passed through the years that I never saw.

So difficult to choose this one, but I'll go with this picture taken near the top of Webster Cliffs above Crawford Notch, NH on a foggy/drippy morning in September 2006. It is very evocative to me of the rigors, ruggedness and rewards of my AT section hikes (I even use this as the background for my Visa card!):

frightening experience along the trail besides lightning.

Might that be Whiskey Spring in Pennsylvania? No. I saw that spring in 2006 and according to my journal it's somewhere between Bald Mountain Shelter and No Business Knob Shelter. I've looked for this spring on subsequent hikes in the area, but was unable to find it, so I'm not even sure if it's in the handbook, at least mine, which is Wingfoot's 2006 edition.

When I think of the AT, the first thing I think of is the people, so a picture like this seems appropriate.18033
The way most of the trail itself is in my memory is something like this: a stupidly hot summer day, with occasional views out of the green tunnel over beautiful farm country. 18035
And finally, I think of this picture most of all. It's the last picture I took in Maine before my camera broke, but it's the best one of the whole trip. 18036

This bear knew i was there, i had to wait 30 minutes for him to leave. He let me know i was too close, and i don't think bear bells would have phased him at all. I don't think he got that big by being afraid of bear bells.
