Headed to Blood Mountain in two weeks. My son and I are going to do the Woody Gap to Neels Gap as a day hike. If any of you are familiar with the area, are there any suggestions as to what is a "must see"? I have a week and want to do as much as I can. Thank you all for any tips and or advice.

It will be early in your day but if the weather is nice spend some time on Big Cedar. I hit it mid-day with great weather and took a nice nap there after enjoying the view.

I agree Big Cedar was pretty cool, Blood mountain itself is cool great view from the rocks right next to the shelter

Preachers Rock 1mi in is impressive, but Blood is the best- from up as mentioned above, as well as views as you begin the decent down the rock to the weathered treeline. Water up at Lance Creek 3mi. Anyone know the status of Slaughter Creek at the base of Blood?

When going down Blood Mtn to Neels Gap be sure pay attention to where the White Blazes switch from the rocks to the tree. My 10 year old son was ahead of me, so I was following him instead of whatching for the blazes, and followed him as we went down the rocks for maybe 15-20 minutes when I noticed there were not any more white blazes. It was raining and then we had to climb back up the slippery rocks. Once back at the top I saw the dobule blaze on the rock leading to the blaze on the tree. A couple of hikers and were about to make the same mistake we did, so I pointed them to the tree, for which they were thankful.

Big Cedar:

I know the rock is a great place to take a rest and enjoy the views. Is there any place to tent up there? I don't have a free-standing tent and was wondering if there was any place with enough dirt for stakes.

Yes, there is a place behind the rock formation, also if you hike on up past preachers rock and as you make the decent down you will see a side trail to the right. Take it and this is a great spot to camp...
