is there a "luxury item" you chose to carry with you on your hike that was outside of the usual suggested list?

I have an electric toothbrush that holds a charge for a week and a half. I use it (and floss) every day.

I have some items that were gifted to me for the thru and hold a very special meaning to me so I am planning to bring them, though those are hike appropriate, so the luxury would be the good intentions behind the gift and the constant reminder of their care.

I don't know how I'd cook, if I didn't carry my cast iron skillet.

I put my Q-tips in my bounce box so I wouldn't die.

(LOL) I like my toothpicks too. I know I can find a piece of stick easy enough and that works fine. But, there's just something about a mint flavored toothpick. Hey. Do you know how you can tell toothpicks were invented in Kentucky? Because if they were invented in any other state they would have been called teethpicks. (I probably should have put that in the cafe).

Perhaps the most costly is my Green Swiss Wenger Swiss Army Knife from Boy Scouts. It has a million attachments including the wrench (for all those tiny bolts I need to tighten on the trail) and scissors (for origami with the pages of a book in the shelter). But it has been with me on every hike I've ever been on. Loads of sentimental value for those 3.3 ounces.

Ok, that and the mini travel Yahtzee. Great fun with the kids when you have some extra time in camp and wandering attention...

I don't do it anymore, but for many years you could find me in the bush with a mini martini kit including gin, vermouth and a glass (and a bit of lemon twist when i could get it). Nothing re-establishes civilization like a good dry martini. I still have my fleece jacket to go with it that looks suspiciously like a blue velour smoking jacket.

That sounds amazing. You could always do a Churchill style martini and just think about the bottle of vermouth sitting at home. It is more UL even though he was far from a UL guy.

Sounds familiar, I carried a battery powered tooth brush this spring but tossed it when I discovered the travel brush the dentist gave me did a better job. They gave me a nice little plastic box that worked great for storing all the dental stuff in.

After using my shoe as a pillow too many times on cold nights when I was wearing all of my clothes, I started carrying a regular small pillow with me. Bliss!

Current carrying microspikes and a windup/solar radio with weather band. They are about a pound each. Haven't used the microspikes yet but the radio has been awesome when I'm sleeping solo in a shelter. Its great to be rock out or kickback with some jazz and NPR can be very entertaining from time to time.

Eventually we are going to hear about someone bringing a digital movie projector into a shelter for movies and tv on the trail. Its only a matter of time.....

Sometimes I carry a pair of waterproof socks. They only weigh 3oz and can be really nice in cold weather when it's sunny out, but it snowed the day before and now everything is slushy and gross.

A lot of people hate on waterproof socks but I think people expect too much from them or use them incorrectly. They won't keep your feet dry in the rain, and they don't breathe well enough to use in warm weather. They have a very narrow scope of uses that they do a good job at, but on a cold morning when your shoes are soaked from hiking through an inch of slush, they are sure worth it!

It's mostly aesthetic, but it could be used to measure alcohol.

I bought a strap on polypro cord for my glasses by Chums, I was so tired of my glasses slipping down my face when I was sweating. They weigh nothing so its not to much of a luxury item, but I never saw it listed as an Item to bring and I tell everyone who wears glasses to grab a strap on..........lol.

I'm tall and I'm a side sleeper for the most part. My sleep system consists of a large therma-rest pillow, a long 20 degree cat's meow bag, and a 2" thick thermarest 40th anniversary sleeping pad. These three items together weigh in at a bulky and somewhat heavy 5lbs. 11oz., but I always sleep well and awake refreshed.

A couple of weeks ago I had been struggling to sleep since some changes at work were weighing heavily on my mind. I went on a hike with my brother that weekend and slept from 7pm to about 6am on friday night without interuption. It was the best sleep I'd had in months.

Heavier than most, but oh so comfortable.

Campmor sells an fuel bottle with a side compartment for built in measurements. You could use this and spare yourself the huge syringe :D

A small (plastic) bottle of Jim Beam typically comes with me on my trips.

I also take TP, which is a luxury item for some :-)
