My daughter (Drifter) just finished her 2012 solo southbound AT thru hike today (November 15). She had a wonderful experience fulfilling a dream she's had since her cross country coach planted the seed in her head while she was in the 6th grade. She made it through the disapointment of having to get off the trail in Vermont for two weeks with a staph infection on the bottom of her foot and having to watch her new found friends continue on without her. As luck and good fortune would have it, she was able to reunite with all three of them one by one and by the time she was in central VA, the 4 of them were back together again after 1000 miles. She did the 4-State challenge. Survived a handful of 30 mile days. And survived the snows in the Smokies from Hurricane Sandy.
As a parent, I want to thank Whiteblaze and all the great people here who do what you do in providing so much information. A fairly common thread I've seen is the concern expressed by a parent or a spouse or the hiker themself or anyone else about hiking alone and how safe it is or is not on the trail. I just have to say, let go and let them live their dream. They'll be fine.
Thanks again to all and see you on the trail. Shae
