Death by Union again. I am sure some non-union business will be willing to start making similar products in time.

We'll still be able to get 'em for awhile. The shelf-life for the currenty supply will get us into the next century.

And maybe by then another company will have purchased the brand and started making more of them. I only wish they would put more goop in the middle. I mean, if I am going to eat like crap, I really want to make it worth while!

More like corporate greed, Worked both sides of the fence, just a ploy to bash the unions, if there is demand for the product they will be around forever.

The teamsters voted yes. The bakers union voted no. So yes, this was death by union. They company could not stay alive without a yes vote.

When I got laid off, if by company had offered me an 8% pay cut, to be followed by set increases over the next few years, I would have said yes. I would have preferred an 8% reduction in pay over a 100% reduction in pay, which is what I got. These are tough times for everyone.

Hostess entered bankruptcy several times, each time getting rescued /postponed by cash infusion from private equity firms. The last time they actually left bankruptcy with MORE debt than they entered with, quite insane. Like MANY companies, pension obligations are much of thier problems. The unions took a haircut on pensions previously, but didnt want more along with wage cuts mandated by bankruptcy. Now the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corp (ie. US taxpayers) will pony up pennies on the dollar for them. Without the concessions the equity-owners were just bleeding cash, best way to salvage their investment value was to cease operations.

Still, its incredible that some people are stupid enough to take NO job, over having a job in the economic environment we are in, especially with the slowdown that is occurring right now. I mean, go back to work if you dont like it and THEN go look for another job, while you have a paycheck coming in.

Cripe people..it's Twinkies. Do we have to get in a pro or anti union screed?

In the words of my old man "Cut the crap"

Further political posts get dancing bananas :)

Now, I'm more of a Devil Dog guy myself..but, as noted in another thread, that northeast staple of bad food is actually owned by Hostess.

And be practical, Twinkies pack a lot easier than Jelly Krimpets!

The Chinese will buy up the recipe and marketing rights. Twinkies, et al, will be made in China and shipped by slow boat to the west coast. From there distribution by truck throughout the US. Loaded with preservatives, we'll never notice any change in taste, texture and texture. Ingredients, who knows?

Not true!

150 calories each, if you ass pack a Twinkie (that's sit on them) they're reduced to the size of a credit card!!! Good for a 5 minute burst of energy, enough for 100 vertical feet!

They tried before.

On September 22, 2004, Interstate Bakeries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapter_11,_Title_11,_United_States_Code). The company also named a new chief executive, Tony Alvarez. Interstate Bakery's stock, which had been at one time $34/share, fell to $2.05/share as they declared bankruptcy. At the time it was the longest bankruptcy in U.S. history. During bankruptcy, Interstate fought a 2007 bid from Mexican baked goods giant Grupo Bimbo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grupo_Bimbo) and Ron Burkle of the Yucaipa Companies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucaipa_Companies).[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostess_Brands#cite_note-14)

Grupo Bimbo-owned bread is about the only stuff I pick up that has the BCTGM union label on it. Without the past pension obligations they could very well be a white knight. Still won't buy the stuff even if it does come back, I don't have to go that far to see union made sweet indulgence. $250 million+ just went into ensuring BCTGM members (under a concessionary contract) continue to push out 700 million 9-calorie pieces of chocolate per day right here in this township. (But no union label or even an explicit Made in USA on those.)

The Union there certainly had its issues, but I strongly believe management did not make a good faith effort to save the company. If anything, they used the union as a scapegoat to kill the company.

Mere weeks before the Mayan Calendar ends. Well played, management. Well played.

Mags I stayed out of it for the first page - I understand it had nothing to do with WB there is nothing to wonder about. In Fact - there is no more Wonder Bread... I do not have an "issue" with you its just talking and walking. No I will not subscribe to a political thread - tis a waste of time. Some day (as it did to me) your interests will change. Ya get board with some stuff and bone up on others-my real interests are survival.

Well, then don't make it one. :D

Some day (as it did to me) your interests will change. Ya get board with some stuff and bone up on others-my real interests are survival.

I'm also into WW2 history, Neil Gaiman's Sandman Series (The AV club is reviewing it again so I a re-reading it), attaining my VM Ware VCP 5 certification, standing up SCCM 2012, trying to learn German so I can talk to my in-laws and so on. You get the idea...

The difference, this is a hiking board. People would be bored stiff. So I don't talk about it. Anymore than I would talk about an alcohol stove on a discussion of Neil Gaiman's GAME OF YOU. ;)

For some reason, people don't think the same logic applies to union talks on a hiking board. :)
