good morning coach. it seems im in the same boat as you. im floating around 3 different ideas for a weekend hike. my first plan is to drive north up to hancock state campground on the kanc and do day hikes knocking off some 4000' peaks. not sure exactly but i will dial that plan in more near the end of the week. we may go further north and knock off the big one, mt washington.

next plan is to drive to western ct and knock off the ct section of the AT between friday and 5pm monday. im not too fond of that plan because we need to find a ride back to my vehicle wherever i decide to leave it. i will dial that plan in over the next few days if thats the one i choose.

plan 3 is to have my mother drop us off down on the coast of rhode island at blue shutters and hike the north south trail back to where i live. its about 55 miles and passes less than one mile from where i live. i like this plan because it is close to home so i do not have to burn alot of loot geting around. if all else fails i can call a number of people to pick us up if need be. i did this hike before and we had a fantastic time. the only real problem is where to sleep but i always seem to find a spot;)......"hike on people"

I'm just waiting to hear from my scheduler about a tournament, I told him I would work Sunday......but I'd rather hike. I'm thinking of filling in a few holes in sections from NJ to VT....we will see.

Nitewalker......I will have to research this local walk you speak of. My wife is always bugging me to go somewhere closer to us, but I have this AT bug up my butt!

If all goes well, I might pass you near Newfound Gap, especially if you are staying at Icewater Springs Friday night. If you see me on Saturday, things did not go well...doing Davenport to Newfound Thursday + Friday.

Rim of the Gap Trail in Jones Gap State Park Friday, giving a shuttle to mountainman on Saturday. I could do the black Friday shopping thing and pepper spray some of my friends and neighbors to keep them from poaching my position in line, but I'd rather hike than shop anyway.

the north south trail travels thru R.I. and skirts the CT border most of the way but only passes thru CT in E Killingly. the trail is 77mi if im not mistaken. there is a fair share of road walking but it is still worth walking at some point. It also connects up with Massachusetts midstate trail that goes to ashburnham, new hampshire and you can hike then jump on the wapack trail for another 21 miles into New Hampshire...here is a quick description of the trail...

I believe I have decided on a walk. North of route 9/ Vt, I have been many times. Mt. Greylock many, and just recently. I have never walked from Rt. 9 to Rt. 2! I'll sleep on it, I could go anywhere.

I had planned to go to DWG that weekend after Sandy. Naturally I didn't, but I have not seen any real reports of trail conditions up there. Even the last time I checked the NPS site, the info was incomplete.

taking a break from hiking to do a little deer hunting this week

I'm giving it a try this year. Bagged my first ever deer on Monday. 41lbs of cleaned, deboned and vacu-sealed venison in the freezer.

I would never have guessed how rewarding an experience it really is. Sitting in a tree stand at dawn and just observing everything that is going on, learning basic tracking and finally forcing myself to pay close attention to everything from the leaf litter on the forest floor to the marks on the trees and the direction of the wind. I think I've paid more attention to the species of trees, birds and other animals running around near the treestand this week than I ever have while trying to power through miles on the trail.

Oh, and yes, please do wear orange if hiking this weekend. The deer rut is in full swing and hunters are out everywhere.

My wife and I hiked 13.1 miles for the Thanksgiving Thirteen Half Marathon fundraiser. You pay $45...hike the hike on your own...proceeds go to a homeless shelter. We felt pretty good about it. It's really a run but we figured hiking is really just running at a real slow pace. :)
