I will be in Wilmington, NC over the week of Christmas. Can anyone recommend some day hikes in the area?

Not much close to Wilmington for hiking. It's where live.

Closest hikes are
1) Carolina beach state park 15 miles to the south.
2) Nusiok trail in the Croatan National forest which is about 1.5 hours north.
3) Lake Wacammaw state park has a five mile trail about 1 hour west.
4) Ft. Fisher has a couple mile beach trail

Unfortunately Wlimington is a hiking wasteland.

Ditto on Rasty's info.

There are the also the State Park lakes within hour or so drive of Wilmington. Like Waccamaw.

If you are driving, you can probably reach sections of the MST at Falls Lake near Raleigh/Durham. Four Oaks NC has Howell Woods. Its a nature preserve near FourOaks/Bentonville and runs to the Neuse River. Several dirt roads and trails through there.

The closest hiking with actual hills is Raven Rock State Park near Raleigh . It's a really nice park on the cape fear river. Backpack or canoe camping. I spent an entire summer inside that park taking kids backpacking or canoe camping.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I will just be walking on the beach.

Kure beach would be my choice. Park just south of Ft. Fisher

This conversation is near my favorite beach....Oak Island, NC. I will be there next summer for two weeks, working a bunch of OT now to pay for it.
