I purchased and have enjoyed Lion King's "Walking with Freedom" DVD. One of the things that I enjoyed on this production was the music. My favorite, I think, is "Appalachian Rain" by John Smith. I was pleased to find that Mr. Smith offers this song as a download from his website. I thought some of you might be interested . . .

Thanks!
And how about that "Appalachian Childhood Dreams" song?
Wow that is a beautiful song.
It's played during the NY section of the film. I found it at zoespeaks.com, the album "Pearl", but unfortunately its not available for free download:o

Yes, RockyTrail, that is a good one also. I understand from Lion King that he plans to release a soundtrack on CD soon with songs from the DVD. I hope this works out. I'd like to have several of the songs.

Certainly! Glad to do it. I was really excited to find it online in a high quality download -- for free and legal!

This brings up a question though, are there any other songs out there about the Appalachian Trail or wherin the AT is significantly referenced? If so, what are the songs and who are they by?

If you go to any of these muscians websites, please let them know how you found them. It might make getting the full CD together a lot easier...I try to tell them all...Hikers dig great music! And a CD would bring more attention to them as seperate artists and help get their other music out...seems almost too simple dont it?
Its the whole helping others through whatever you do thing...

thanks Tripp.

Those of you who are fans of this song may find this interesting. Today I ordered directly from John Smith a complete collection of his 5 CD's, autographed and shipped for $50 even, to give as a Christmas gift. Anyway, in my correspondence with John Smith, I mentioned my first introduction to his music was from Lion King's film and that "Appalachian Rain" was still a favorite of mine. I also inquired if he had done any hiking on the A.T. He replied back, and shared quite a bit about the origin of this beautiful song and about his own hiking experiences. Here is part of his reply to me . . .

"I have only day hiked the AT in several states, GA, VA, NH,VT, MA, NY I think, maybe another one or two. I had been hiking a piece north of Lynchburg VA when I started the song. I was at the Virginia center for creative arts (VCCA) an art colony at Buena Vista college and the AT is very close, my friend Buddy Mondlock and I are birders and went hiking the AT one day. When I got back to the VCCA I was in my studio playing piano and the song started to come. Later that night Buddy showed up and I invited him to help me write the song. The story is inspired by my brother in-law who actually started to hike the trail after getting his walking papers from his sweetheart. He began the trip with a close friend and unfortunately somewhere in VA they were hiking and their plan was once a week to stash their packs and go into town for showers, a meal, a beer, and back to the trail. One of those times when they came back, all of there stuff was stolen. So they ended up putting out their thumbs and hitched to Boulder Colorado for a different kind of adventure."

"I just looked at your site about the AT, very well done. A great life goal to hike the trail over the years in sections. I do think about something like that. We'll see."
