I did this experiment to test the viability of peanut butter for a maildrop. Plus I was just curious. Maybe someone will find it interesting.

Mix
16 oz peanut butter (peanuts, salt)
12 oz wheat germ
8 oz raisins
9 oz honey

Place into small (about 2-3 fluid oz) plastic cups. Fill first cup to top, fill second cup half way. Cover/seal with saran wrap as best I can.

7/20/12
Make three sets.

Place in freezer
Place in fridge
Place in dark cabinet

10/21/12
Remove all three sets, place on table in kitchen.

11/3/12
Taste test.

Freezer: tastes fresh
Fridge: pretty good, only slightly less than freezer
Cabinet: Tastes a little stale but edible. I didn’t get sick.

peanut butter was easy to buy on trail. came in its own container that would be empty in 3 days :)

I once had a jar of previously opened peanut butter in a cabinet in my hunting camp for about 3 years.
When I cleaned the camp out, I inspected it. If I hadnt known how old it was, I wouldnt have been able to tell, it looked and smelled new
Of course I threw it out, but honestly, I bet it was fine.

Fake peanut butter will keep indefinitely. Real peanut had oils that can go rancid at room temperature.
